  • Distance dependent scaling / effect on the dry sample

Hey Dietz, how are you today? I have a question about the Distant Dependent Scaling and the effect this has on the dry sample. When I‘m correctly understanding the feature, it means that the dry signal gets changed relatively to its position in the sound stage. This then should affect the volume but does it also affect the frequency spectrum of the dry sample. It is clear that instruments positionned further back have less high-content in the spectrum. Is this also taken into consideration? What about the MirX presets? As there is the dry/wet ratio fader, which is usually set at 63, I wonder, if the part of the dry sample here is or is not affected by such a frequency adjustment relative to its position in the sound stage. In my understanding, it wouldn‘t be only the reverb, that would have less high frequemcies but also the dry sample. The simple question is, if in the mixing process in both versions, MirX and MirPro, I have to pull down some of the high frequencies of instruments set further in the back or if this has already been taken into consideration in the reverb (here, I guess it is) and in the dry sample. Thank you very much, Christian

  • Hi Christian,

There is an option for additional distance dependent HF-filtering in MIR Pro (not MIRx) which should take care for the issue all by itself. It only affects the direct signal - not the IR-part, which has this information "burnt in" from the actual recording process, of course.

You can add this feature to MIRx-Mode presets in MIR Pro manually, but it is not used for any MIRx preset. I have to admit that during my work with MIR I leave it of most of the time, because usually I want _more_ definition from the dry signal (which takes the place of a spot-mic used during an actual recording in a hall), not less. Any high-frequency content that disturbs me during the creation of MIRx presets is eleminated by means of the Character EQ anyway (a.k.a. as "Pre EQ" in MIRx itself). :-)

    HTH,

  • Ah, I see. As in orchestral recordings, there would not only be ambiance or room mics recording, but also group or spot mics, there wouldn‘t necessarily be that loss of high frequency content in the „dry“ signal. By „additional distance dependent HF-filtering in MIR Pro“, you mean the Distance dependent scaling, or are these two different things?

  •         This is what I'm talking about:

  • Very clear and informative. That's what I always miss in the MIR manual, being too concise. :)

    Thank you both of you.
