  • how to map VSL matrix articulations to Cubase Expression Map

Hi I am trying to map Vienna Solo Strings 1 to a Cubase 9.5 Expression Map.  I used the expression map  (VSL_Strings_Expressionmaps_v.1.11) posted by VSL.  When I imported this map into Cubase, I got some strange results.  Legato came out mapped to staccato articulations, non-legato to staccato  and pizz to harmonics.  (See attached screen shots of my Cubase Expression Map setup and Vienna Instruments matrix setup).

I can partly fix this by making my own expression map in Cubase with articulations mapped correctly, but there is a bigger problem.  I can’t figure out how to map the Y-Axis articulations in the VLS matrix to a Cubase Expression Map.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

  • Do you want the Y-axis to be set by CC1?

If so then in Cubase Expression Map Setup go to the top right corner to Output Mappings.

    Press '+'

When the new row is added to Output Mappings, mouse to the left cell 'Note-On' and click it.  It should be a drop down list.  Select 'Controller'.  In the Middle Cell make sure it says 'CC 1'.  The right cell should be a number between 1-127.  Since you only have two y-axis choices.  Right cell of 1 for top y-axis, and 127 for bottom y-axis.

I'm not a fan of CC1 as a Y-axis.  When a Y-axis gets large it is harder to manage the CC1 numbering  system.

You have to select a number that will fall in the correct cell.  Meh.  I've been using keyswitch for y-axis because now there is a hard coded key # that I can see.

Thanks so much SonicSonar.  Your answer worked very well.  I was able to do a test expression map with both X and Y axis.  I used CC, but I see what you mean about the CC numbering system.  Thanks again.  You saved me much head-banging.
