    Hi Guys,

This is a short Practice with Brass Instruments, I now spend Time on each Single Instrument and discover how important a good Layering is.

I would have replied to this sooner if I had seen it. I love brass, and I love VSL instruments. I think your brass practice sounded pretty good. I would be very interested in hearing more of your work.

In my own experiments and trials and experimenting, I have found nothing to beat VSL brass. In addition to everything brass sold by VSL, I also own Chris Hein Orchestral Brass, Spitfire Brass (the newest version) and Berlin Brass, Cinebrass and Cinebrass Pro. I know, crazy of me to buy all of these libraries.

Anyway, nothing beats VSL brass in my opinion. Other libraries might have some strengths in a particular area, but then they have weaknesses somewhere else. Please stay in touch and share your journey in using VSL brass. I'm sorry you did not get more of a response. Here is an arrangement I did using all VSL brass.

  • Thank You Paul for Your Comment.

Until this Practice here, the VSL Brass was a Mystery to me. Soon I discovered for my Style of Music I need long Brass Notes but also short rhythm Notes. Then there was a Point, where I simply want to make a Brass Piece until it sounds good, i dont agreed to my own excuses for not making a Brass Piece ;)

The best Thing on VSL is that you cant hide anything, so either it sounds correct, from choosing correct Articulations or it wont sound correct played. Thats a important Point If I look at this from a Learning Curve Point of View.

Now after starting this Project I felt comfortable with making a Recreation of Back to the Future Maintheme. Then I discovered also the percussion is doing great Job.

I often heard in Groups on social Media, they are excited especially on the VSL Brass, at same Time I hear often I should look into another Library.

The only Library I look forward is Samplemodeling, but the Reason is not that they sound great from acoustic Level but how natural you can play it with the Breathcontroller. The Articulations are triggered by Breath.

I like the Trumpets in Your Piece, are those Dimension Brass ?

    cheers

  • I do agree with You, the best thing on VSL is because every Single Instrument is highly detailed, every Style a Orchestra can create, can be created with VSL. In my Opinion thats the biggest Benefit.

The instruments in my Handel arrangement are from the Brass I collection plus also some instruments from Dimension Brass. I used the Bb trumpet, C trumpet, Cornet, Triple Horn, Vienna Horn, 2 dimension brass horns, Tenor Trombone, a Dimension Brass trombone, Bass Trombone, and Tuba.

I hope to hear more of your work soon.

  • Since I only use Instruments from Brass I and Brass II, I wonder whats your Experience when comparing the classic Brass Libarries to Dimension Brass ?

The Bb Trumpet, the Cornet and the Triple Horn are just as good as the original Brass I and Brass II. That is based on number of articulations, sound quality, four velocity layers, dynamics etc. I personally prefer the sound quality of these three to any other VSL brass alternatives.

Dimension Brass sounds great, and I use it, but it was always intended to be used in an ensemble, so it does not offer as many articulations and other options. It has a great sound, more velocity layers than Berlin Brass, and is more flexible and easier to use than Berlin Brass. But like I said, if I had say a trumpet solo, I would use the VSL Bb Trumpet. If I had a horn solo I would use the VSL Triple Horn, etc.

  • Yes I agree, I had One Triple Horn, now I made 4 Triple Horns and detune them slightly. Trumpet Bb is also my favorite Trumpet. I now tried this in Combination with Something I saw on VSl Tutorials. Theres One VSL Tutorial, in which a Trumpet C with Autovoices is played and have two Voices. The Phenomena what I discovered here is when Trumpets (Bb1 and Bb 2 and Piccolo) close to each other play in the same Range, they produce a Flangerlike Effect. I was reminded to a Time I only made electronic Style of Music, it was common Thing to put a Flanger and Phaser Effects on String Pads. But Today I want a clean Fanfare Sound, hihi

The Result with 4 Triple Horns and Bass Trombone gives more Impact on the Final Chord. (added a Dimension Bass too)

I made a Update. Its not a Full Brass Section. But its good for my new Arrangements that gets some Fanfare like Ideas. Now use all of the Portato and short Portato Repetition Articulations. (before I was changing between staccato and portato, but discovered theres always the heavy attack on the Sound)
