• Printing stems for each separate MIR capsule/output?

    Dietz and/or others...

    • Score mixer and I are trying to print separate stems for each microphone I have in MIRpro for a 5.1 mix.
    • Using VEPro6/MIRpro/etc in Logic X (everything updated).  Mac is main on 10.12.6, Windows slave.
    • Sessions were written in stereo.

I'm confused on how to get from a stereo session in LogicX/VEPro6/MIRpro, convert everything to 5.1, then do the proper assignments so I can have each mic capsule print on a seperate audio track in Logic X.

When I use "Convert Project Channel Configuration..." in the VEPro Instance menu, I select 5.1 Configuration, then all of my tracks in VEPro disappear and I get a plugin error "Toolkit: Vienna Surround Balance (Incompatible channel configuration: Stereo to Stereo."  To get around this, I save my channel set, create a "New Project" in VEPro, then load up my channel set.  (Now in the MIR Pro Output Editor, the 5.1 presets are no longer italicized.)

So, how do I route these mics around in VEPro?  The little "+" sign next to each instrument?  Create BUS channels?  I can't figure it out except separating the whole wet (all mics) from the dry.  For example, I can't find "Output LS" except in the MIRpro Output Matrix.

    Next... in Logic X...

When I select VEPro "Multi-Output (1x1.5, 15x Stereo)" I get an error message that says "Failed to load Audio Unit "Vienna Ense", please contact the manufacturer for an updated version or further assistance."  Since I'm only printing stems in Logic (mixer works in Protools) do I need to make the Logic session 5.1 or could I use the "Multi-Output (16xStereo)" and print stems that way?

Apologies, I know that's a lot to unpack... I've searched for a while today looking for a solution myself but can't find one.

  • It's been a while sincve I used Logic for actual surround audio work, so I might just miss the obvious - but I can't really follow.

I just tried to "format convert" an existing (i.e.: previously saved) VE Pro Project in stand-alone from stereo to 5.0. and 5.1, and this works like expected: The format selection dialog window shows up, and after I've chosen the new target format I'm told by MIR Pro: "The channel configuration has been changed. Please select an appropriate output format in the Vienna MIR Pro Output Editor."

... as soon as I've done this, I'm perfectly able to work in surround. ... do you have any Surround Balancers already instantiated in your stereo setup?

  • Hmm... what about my question framed this way:

How do I put each MIR Pro mic capsule on a different track in VEPro?

  • Do you mean "track" like in "different output"? And "capsule" as in "microphone", or is this your description for the individual MIR Ions on a Venue's stage?

... sorry to pester you, but at the moment it seems as I have a language issue. ;-D

  • Not pestering at all!  I appreciate the help.

For example, my 5.1 MIR Pro instance "Main Microphone" has 5 capsules: L, R, C, LFE, Ls, Rs.

Can I assign each one to a different bus? "L" on bus 1, "Ls" on bus 2... etc...

  • Oh! So you want to get multiple mono paths instead of the combined 5.1 path (... like the "sub paths" in ProTools or the "child paths" in Cubase/Nuendo)? I'm afraid that's not possible in Vienna Ensemble - at least not as far as I know. 8-/

... if you tell me that this is the actual question then I'll get in touch with VE Pro's software engineers to make sure that I'm not spreading wrong information here.

  • Yes exactly!  Like sub paths.

  • Hi Stephen,

Martin Saleteg - VSL's head of software development - just wrote in answer to this thread:

"As for the last question, no, that is not possible in such a 5.1 setup."

... sorry to have no better news for you ... :-/

    Kind regards,
