  • VE 6 colour pallete

    Hi VSL team,

am I missing something or has the colour choice been drastically cut down in VE 6?

I was just about to update my template and could not pick the colour I wanted, instead I got a limited colour palette (attached). Why was the option of choosing any colour been eliminated?

I use individual colour for every instrument in my template, this seems to be a pretty standard feature availible in every DAW, so why limit the user?

If I have missed something and I can still choose the colour I need I apologise and kindly ask to point me in the right direction.

    Regards,
    Stan K

  • The color palette and it's user interface in VEP is straight out of the 1990's. Granted it's not the most critical feature, but many, many users rely in part on colors as a way to organize and recognize tracks, especially when you have large. channel-laden instances.

Actually, Cubase's color palette, while better because it allows custom colors, is still kludgy to work with.

Again, this is more of a nuisance than a problem, but it is a nuisance.

  • Right. What I don't get, though, is why VSL felt the need to slim this feature down to a set number of gloomy colours... In VE 5 you could in fact (and I did) select any colour you wanted. Why fix something that wasn't broken in the first place?

And you are right about the colour management in Cubase. I was hoping they would overhaul it in 9.5 but nope. Actually, many people on the Steinberg forums have been complaining about the lacking functionality of the colour palette for a while, and it always makes the wishlist for the next update. Fingers crossed for Cubase 10 (and VE 7 for that matter).

  • As far as I can tell (I'm on VE Pro 7) this is still what we have to work with.  I'm setting up a new template now, and it's just a real drag.  My Cubase colors are really specific and I even grade them from light to dark for higher-to-lower pitches of things, like my strings are all green, but the violins 1 will be a very light green, and the basses much darker, etc.  It really helps me navigate and make sense of large templates, and that is exactly why I am using VE Pro.

Any chance you can throw us some hope, VSL?

  • Hi all!

For both VE7 & VE Pro 7, you can either use the given pallet of 76 colors OR use any color you can think of by opening the system color dialog. Works on macOS & Windows.

    Best regards,
    Andreas
