  • Multiple computers vs UAD MK2 quad

    Hi everyone,

i have a general question, let me start by saying what i have.

1- One computer (PC), latest hardware and lots of RAM

    2- Cubase

    3- VLS special edition complete

4- UAD thunderbolt, MK2 Quad core.

    5- Reference speakers, headphones, others.

What I’m trying to do is combine quite a lot of sounds (in general) to play sound track movies and others.

I have been looking around in youtube and other forums to see if i need to run client server with VLS, so using master PC and multiple server(s).

my question is, as i can see using UAD is so powerful with all the additional processing (equalizer, compressor, etc)

Do i still need to invest in multiple PCs to run my projects?

I'm not sure when i will start seeing coughing (popping and clicking) sounds (overload processing) while i'm trying to do what i want to do.

I don't mind spending money (actually i have more than few PCs), but the headache and the work involved setting up all of this (might be overwhelming)  which will push my focus away from creating music and just dealing with computers.

I'm doing this as a hobby, not a business, but i don't want to have limitations, especially i struggle a lot with older system that had huge latencies.

Thanks for your input and time.

  • I could give you a list of the "good" UAD plugins. I have the Apollo 8 Quad and I really only use a handful. The induced latency is absurd, so get used to comitting preamp inserts in "Rec" mode for real instruments. You won't be able to run UAD plugins from VEP6 on slave machines. Even if you had a UAD Satellite on every remote machine, the latency would make your instruments unplayable. Playback would be okay, just not tracking.

LMK if you want a short list. FWIW, I'd put the money toward slave machines and run your returns through Virtual Channels in the UAD Console. You'll thank me later.

  • Hi James,

Few things that i didn't understand here, don't forget i'm just setting up this and learning how it works.

You won't be able to run UAD plugins from VEP6 on slave machines (what do you mean by VEP6?)

i'm still not clear of your reply, are you saying we don't need to buy UAD, the plugins are worthless at the end?

I'm still asking do we need UAD at all if i'm using VSL, how am i suppose to get an hp output without UAD or sound module?

are you saying i need UAD but plugins are worthless (at the end)? then how do i enrich the sound from VSL as it is dry as you may know?

are you saying the best solution is using master slave computers with VSL? how many slaves (servers) do i need?

initially (and in theory) i thought i can run everything in one single strong computer (which i have) and use a sound module to add processing at the end which has 0 latency.

is there such thing that i can use slave machine(s), with master and i still use the master with UAD and its plugins? so the audio signal goes from the slaves to the master through my DAW and enrich it in the UAD plugins?

let me list the plugins that i have and sure, please send me your list:

ps: doesn't include the free ones that came with UAD appolo (bought 6 plugins)

    1-AMPEX ATR102 Mastering tape recorder

    2- API Vision Channel Strip

    3- Dytronics Cyclosonic Panner

    4- Lexicon 224 D reverb

5- Manley Variable Mu Limiter Compressor

    6- Manley Massive Passive EQ

    Thanks

    -John

  • sorry ... Vienna Enssemble Pro 6 .. got it

  • The UAD stuff is great. There's just a lot of latency if you want to run UAD plugins inside of VEP 6. I don't run any virtual instruments on my Pro Tools Mac: I let VEP6 handle everything on a remote Mac.

Here's a shot of my Pro Tools setup:
