I recently had the chance to work with a friend who was temping up Wind Ensemble music with the VSL Saxophones I, and frankly he buried them in the mix, because the attacks and vibrato are too much too blend with the ensemble. The soprano does okay, but the tenor has extreme timbral changes with the slightest increase in velocity and it just didn't blend with the ensemble. And who needs a soprano before bari and alto? He ended up using samples of me playing instead.
I love the Opus 2 samples I just purchased, and I have high hopes that Saxophones II will provide a more useful sampling of the alto and bari. That being said, I think that the VSL saxes were the best sax library when released...they just don't work for what wind ensemble and band people need. Its no different with other companies though....Yellow Tools spent years developing CANDY, and then they only provided classical set-ups on some instruments. What a waste.
Hook me up Herb, no one samples like you, you just didn't sample what I need yet!!!
