  • The Cavatina

    Hi Everyone.

I've just bought the Concert Guitar library and am blown away with it!

I dont use a DAW so all my stuff is done in Sibelius with VI Pro MIRx

I've only had the library since this weekend, but have finished a version of Cavatina that i wanted to post to see if anyone out there who uses Sibelius could see if they could recommend techniques to get the play back better as i cant really be done with Logic Pro!

I love the Guitar and have played it for years and this tune is one of the reasons i fell in love with it in the first place!

I have looked but i couldnt see what the forum policy was on posting covers, so please except my appologies if i have broken any forum rules and ill delete the post and the link.

    Kindest Regards

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,

Very nice music indeed. You asked how to improve the performance?

The first thing to consider is the human playback. I don't know Sibelius, but isn't there a means to humanize the playing back?

Next to that, some dynamic variation is required. Everything sounds rather 'flat'.

A third help could be the playing environment. The ambience cintributes a lot to the overal sound of the instrument (which sounds very thin here).

And finally the rhythmic variation. A live player doesn't play straight forward in one equal movement.

So keep up the good spirit and keep experimenting. Don't forget to listen to good live recordings and try to imitate as precisely as possible keeping in mind the observations mentioned above. However keep in mind that it doesn't need long pieces to experiment. A 30 " piece can be much more rewarding to try out things on. It's no use to repeat your inaccuracies or mistakes for a long time. You can do that later, when you've learned to master these skills.

    Kindly,

    Jos

  • Hi Paul,

Great to see you posting your own production here.  This is indeed a beautiful piece of music and easy to see how you developed your interest in the guitar because of it.  I echo the advice from Jos, as there is definitely room to enhance the performance with more convincing/bolder gestures.  However, in its current form, the music is beautiful enough to at least "get you in a zone" so to speak and is almost hypnotic.

    All the best,

    Dave

  • Hi Jos and Dave

Thanks so much for taking the time to listen to my mock up and offer some really good advise to make improvements to it.

I'll have another go at it and see if i can post an improvement based on your feedback. Its funny really as i have played this tune for years and i struggled (i still do!) with the 1st 3 bars as the technique needed to keep the melody going (to me anyway!) is insanely hard. i got the playback (with VSL's lovely VI pro) to sound how i used to struggle with it...and i have to say hats off to VSL for the way you can manipulat the samples to sound really human.

Jos your bang on with regards to rythmic variation and i'll be working on this in my next version of it, and Dave your right too about the need for bolder gestures.

I'll be back again once I've posted an updated version

    kindest regards

    Paul

  • Nice piece. I have tried using VSL instruments in Sibelius and did not particularly like my results. This sounds very nice.

  • Hi Paul

Thanks for taking the time to listen to it mate, and for your kind coments about the playback.

I have to say i wasnt blown away with the Sibelius playback for a long time, as it can be quite tricky to get good results, especially if your more used to using a DAW as Sibelius can seem a huge step backwards really!

But for me, i can never really get on with Logic Pro so have spent ages playing about with Sibelius to try and learn all the in's and out's, and you can achieve some brilliant things with it, especially if you use hidden dynamics for different voices, and use the inspector for changing timing of phrases etc.

if you want to get back into Sibelius and get stuck with anything, get in touch mate, and i'll help in any way i can

    Have a good one

    Paul
