  • Feedback/Suggestions: Mockup of Mario 3D world Bullet BIll Express

    Greetings!

I recently got VSL SE Volume 1+ bundle. I decided to practice with it by mocking up a song from a game I really enjoy. It should be noted that I am not an orchestrator and did not have the sheet music for this, so I did everything by ear.

    Hre is the original:
Super Mario 3D World OST: Bullet Bill Express

    Here is my version:
    My mock up

I know there are some volume issues on some of the instruments, but one of my main concerns is the horns at 23 seconds. I tried to find a horn that sounded close to that. I am guessing it's a french horn, but I'm not sure. I am thinking the vienna horn would do nicely though. The trumpets sustained articulation don't sound quite right and the next lowest horn is a tuba which is then too low. Would the vienna horn be what I'm looking for?

Other than that, I am still getting used to how the articulations work. I really enjoy using this library though much moreso than other libraries I've used. I tried creating another song from Mario Galaxy with the other library and it turned out nowhere as near as close as this one did.

Please let me know what you think and please give me your feedback. As I said before, I currently only have Special Edition Vol. 1 and Vol. 1 Plus to work with. What other expansions do you suggest I get in order to more closely mimic this sound? Or if it is possible to recreate this song with this particular set of instruments, what should I learn or do more research on inparticular?

    Thanks for your time!

  • Hi ViRiX,

Did you try to double/triple the soloist (you'd need to play around with settings, of course) ? I thought you did a pretty good job in terms of articulations, sometimes your notes are shorter than the ones in the original, but that shouldn't be hard to fix. And as soon as you've got the section instead of the soloist, it should be pretty close.

Speaking of expansions, Dimension Brass would be unbeatable for your purposes, I believe. Check it out, at least.

    Regards,

    Crusoe.

  • Sounds fairly close except the brass. Good work so far. I would keep working on the brass.

  • Thanks! Yeah the brass was the trickiest part with the strings being the second trickiest part. I've sense gotten the Smart Orchestra which was extremely useful in another Mario-esque song I'm creating.

Doubling the soloist, I'll give that a shot. I'll also check Dimension out as well. Does it work in the VSL Player too?

  • I have to agree with Paul. You've coe pretty close, but the brass section has room for improvement. Most of the virtual version is impressive and shows your skills for that sort of music.

Please go on with it. It's ecen more impresseive knowing that you only used the SE ionstruments. Nothing wrong with these, but they are limited in articulations and recorded instrumental specificities. So I really appreciate your efforts to obtain such a good result!

Yes. With VI player, just to be precise, because they also have Synchron Player, which is, technically, a VSL Player too 😊.

  • I enjoyed listening to your rendition of this.  Having grown up on Super Mario, and recently having some fun nostalgic gaming moments on my SuperNES Classic, I was instantly taken back to those carefree days.  As others have stated, the brass is not as convincing as it could be, but still an excellent effort.  Congrats!
