This is a piece for string quartet, Djembe (West Africa), Riq (Arabic, Middle East) and Darabuka (Egypt, Asia). As most of us know, one of the many virtues of virtual orchestration is combining instruments that have little or no history of playing together.

  • I really liked the composition..What a fantastic textural combination of exotic percussion with string quartet! Your careful use of percussion avoids it from becoming monotonous with repetitive rhythms.

The piece clearly shows your mastery of string quartet but also a deep knowledge of the other instruments used. This should totally be performed by ensembles. Any thoughts of expanding this into a larger scale piece with string quartet-like movements?

    Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

Thanks! No plans to chase after live performance, am satisfied with electronic version. I'm busy writing the last movement of a new symphony, so probably will not incorporate this piece into a larger work, at least not in the foreseeable future. Jerry

  • Hi Jerry,

Another wonderful piece in a remarkable combo. Very nice orchestration btw with well balanced interventions for all musicians. That's why it is such a good composition. Maybe it's not your intention to have it performed live, but I can assure that the musicians would have a lot of fun doing it!

  • Hi Jerry,

I listened twice to get used to that combination of strings and percussion. The first listen suggested a few thoughts that are already mentioned above - totally agree on the balance, but my personal connotations attached to those instruments just didn't let me to concentrate on the music itself. Those percussive instruments just jumped out on me, and my mind was consumed :) But, on the second listen I was able to overcome this obstacle, and paid attention to that slightly "cutting" violin and overall fairly intense texture, delicately peppered by the world percussion that does its shadow work, I imagine.

So, being a fairly close-minded person, I appreciated the composition after detaching myself somewhat from the sounds and re-attaching to the notes instead.

    Cheers,

    Crusoe.
