  • FX Bus and MIDI Control

Greetings, I have a difficult issue to solve.  In short, I simply wish to automate preset changes on FX that are inserted on a VEP6 server from my DAW during live performance.

My setup is as follows: Digital Performer is my DAW which is on the host MacBook Pro.  I have multiple channels of virtual instruments on the VEP6 server on another MacBook Pro.  I am getting good results with my virtual instruments on the server responding and feeding audio back to my DAW.  I have set up an FX bus on the server with Native Instruments Guitar Rig. I have no problem sending audio from my guitar through the DAW in a loop to and from the FX bus. I can use the "Automation Mapping" option on the server to access parameter changes within Guitar Rig (See image). But the preset selection option does not seem apparent.

To be sure that I can send preset changes, I did place an instance of Guitar Rig on my DAW in a VRack channel (a method where many songs can use the same FX or virtual intrument in DP) and also created a MIDI track in a song to send preset changes to Guitar Rig. This worked without a hitch, yet it puts a bit too much processing strain on the DAW. I get audio overrun errors, hence why I am farming out FX and virtual instruments to a VEP6 server. In any case, I can send prests to Guitar Rig when it is all on one computer.

There is another method for Guitar Rig to respond to MIDI messages other than preset (program) changes to change presets, and that is to send a specific CC command which Guitar Rig has been programmed to remap to preset change. It will then jump to the programmed preset. However, what appears in the destination of VEP6 "Automation Mapping" are only 512 parameter changes, bypass and disable. I suspect these are premapped CC commands with perhaps a LSB added to increase the number of parameters to 512. I am not sure if this is the case. But what I am sure is that I have tried all kinds of methods to make the preset automation work and have found no way to do it.

    Can it be done?

  • I should add that I have tried the "Learn" option withing VEP6 Automation Mapping. The Source "Learn" works well enough, but how to Learn in Destination?

    Still hoping for some help!

I am still wandering the wilderness here. Sure would be great if someone would help me out here. 😕

  • Hey, It sounds like you are doing what I want to do.  Can you email me off here.  Maybe I can pick your brain.....

    Thanks

  • Apparently, GR does not expose _switch preset_ to VE Pro, so there is no learn here.

  • Okay, could you ask on this forum?

  • Is expose _switch preset_ some kind of script? I ask so I can be clear when I approach Native Instruments on this issue.
    Thanks!

This is on the order of <a fact>, if it does not appear in the list you can't manipulate it in the mapping.

It is in all probability a script, yes. Take it to NI forums first, because you're more likely to get some kind of attention from say EvilDragon or someone there than a support ticket where someone says 'meh, this is certainly no emergency'.

  • Thanks. This does not fill me full of hope, yet it sounds realistic.

Still I search for a workaround. I do have a iConnectMIDI4+ patchbay that does allow for sending MIDI and audio between the two computers via ethernet. Maybe I can do a Standalone Guitar Rig and just bypass VEP6 altogether. ;-)
