  • Working Without MIDI Controller

Hello, I am a new user of Vienna Instruments Pro and VSL in general. I was wondering, as someone who lacks a MIDI controller, how would one go about transitioning between different articulations in a sequencer? I use FL Studio, so I was hoping there would be an effective way to automate this parameter without effecting velocity, as this is something I would like to control independantly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  • It's possible but I'd really really recommend getting some cheap MIDI faders.

But aside from that, you should set up your VIpro articulations with keyswitches.

  • You're right, that'll be for the best. My other concern was that I would only be able to change articulations in a single channel by recording as I play, is this true? Or is there a way to achieve this through sequencing?

  • So, the way I've got mine set up is in the VIpro matrix, I have a bunch of articulations.

I navigate that matrix through keyswitches that are on the lower end of the keyboard (my primary keyoard is a 64-key).  The X axis is white notes, the Y axis is black notes.  I load one instrument, on one channel, and in the performance, I switch articulations through those key switches.  Of course, the keyswitches are outside the range of the instrument.

Then, I have velocity crossfade on, so that no matter what the velocity is, the "loudness" of that articulation is determined by the velocity Xfade CC position (low = soft, high = loud).

    Does that kinda make sense?

Yes, that makes sense. I guess what I'm asking is, if I were to lay my notes out in a sequence instead of actually plahying them, would I be able to record in the articulation switches some way during playback? Or do I have to always play and switch articulations in real time? I hope I'm not being too confusing! ðŸ˜¶

  • You can always go back and manually add key switches, controller changes etc... to your individual tracks, no need to record them in real time.

Many VSL owners will just use a small set of basic articualtions when they are composing a piece. Then once it is done, they'll go back in add all of the various key switches etc... that they want.

  • Ah, good to know. So, is there some way to automate keyswitches in the DAW itself? How would one go about adding keyswitches manually? Maybe I haven't looked hard enough, but I haven't seen anything about this. Again, I'm using FL Studio.

  • I've never heard of or used FL Studio, but if it's like any other DAW, you would just manually add the key switches to a midi track the same way you would add any other notes. Just place the kew switches right before the note to trigger the articulation change.

VIP also has "speed control" that you can setup to automatically switch between a few different articulations based on how fast the incoming notes are played.

Hot damn, now that you say it I feel super foolish for not even thinking to try that. But that sure as hell did it ðŸ˜ƒ Thanks so much for the help, guys!
