  • Problem with dynamics!

    Hello to all,

and please, excuse me if ths subject has been discussed before.
I am currently writing for a theatrical play, using 7 instruments (Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone, Percussion, Violin & Contrabass). All my samples - except the percussion - are from Vienna SE with Vienna Instruments Pro 2. I am using Logic Pro X.
My problem is that when I play in lower dynamics (pp, p, mp) the sounds are barely audible; when I raise the MIDI volume above approx. 64 (CC2, CC3, CC7, CC11), things are getting better.
What am I doing wrong? I use velocity xf which I control through CC's. Any help will be much appreciated, the deadline is closing up on me and I'm quite nervous... :)

    Thanks in advance!
    Antonis

  • Hello again,

Is there a chance that somebody could provide me with some guidelines as to what I could/should do or what I do wrong? Or my problem is not supported by customer support and I should look elsewhere for help?

    Thanks again!

  • Hi Antonis,

I think the problem could be solved by using the Dynamic Range Scaler (DynR). You find it when you click on the "advanced" tab in the right upper corner of the Vienna Instruments Pro window. You see the fader at the bottom of the VIPro window.

When you set the fader to zero, the soft tones are as loud as the loud tones. The difference between loud and soft tones increases when you increase the value of DynR. Good Luck!

  • Hi MMKA,

yes, that made things quite better! I don't know if there is something more that can be done through VI Pro but now all sounds much more realistic. As you understand, I am still in a learning curve :)
Thank you very much for your help, really appreciated!
If someone has any extra tips to offer, you'd be most welcome!

  • You could also experiment with the expression fader in conjuction with the Vel X fade.

  • Hi,

I don't understand you when you say: " when I raise the MIDI volume above approx. 64 (CC2, CC3, CC7, CC11)". What are you controlling with each CC, the C7 is the MIDI Volume, CC11 is the expression, CC2 is the breath control and CC3 is custom controller

Of course you can change your settings and control the parameter you want with the CC you want. Also depending on your DAW you can manipulate and convert these messages.

When i compose for the kind of instruments you use i begin by using the CC11 (expression) and if i have problems in the lower dynamics i use the same curve for the CC7 Volume and i play with it (compress it /and / or / add Volume).

    Hope this can help.
