Would there be a performance difference if I run 10x VSTi in one instances or 10x VSTi each in it's own instance?

I used to have instances with some VSTi's in it. For example 3x Massive, 3x Zebra2, etc. in one instance. Another instance for 3x Kontakt, etc. But most of the time I don't use these instances so it's a waste of channels and cluttering audio/midi tracks and especially automation in Cubase.

So I'm thinking about creating Cubase Track Presets for stereo-out Kontakt and multi-out Kontakt (VEP instances), loading an empty Kontakt in Vienna and configures the audio/midi in Cubase. After that I load the required Kontakt lib on VEP server instance. Each non-multi-timbral VSTi (Massive/Zebra2/FM8/etc.) gets it's own VEP instance the same way.

I would need arround 20 of these instances. My questions are (in comparison with the same amount of VSTi in just 4 instances):

- Would this create unnecessary overhead in Cubase?

- Would this create unnecessary overhead in VEP server?

Cheers,

Martijn

i'm relatively new to the whole VE universe and currently setting up my template(s).

I have the same question, did you find an answer somewhere else?

Unfortunately the manual does not cover best practises and I couldn't find a FAQ.

Other questions that popped up:

- Do I need a master bus in an instance or is just the instrument ok? (i guess so cos it works)

- took me ages to find out what to install on the main computer just to get the vienna vst plugin

- how do I get the embedded view for an audio effect plugin (like for the instruments), and not have it as a floating window?

- I use ableton (and a bit of studio one), neither are covered in the manual, and barely on the internet

Hi,

You will have a bit more overhead when using instances for only one mono-timbral plug-in, but VE PRO is very efficient when it comes to different approaches.

@10us: You should be fine with your idea. Give it a try. Personally I like to enable/disable plug-ins and automate if necessary, with the plug-ins organized in category instances (winds, strings, pads, basses...)

@markus.schlosser: Welcome!

- Do I need a master bus in an instance or is just the instrument ok? (i guess so cos it works)
=> You don't need to have a master bus.

- took me ages to find out what to install on the main computer just to get the vienna vst plugin
=> Hm. It's just the software installation, the same for every computer you want to use VE PRO on...

- how do I get the embedded view for an audio effect plugin (like for the instruments), and not have it as a floating window?
=> Unfortunately you don't.

- I use ableton (and a bit of studio one), neither are covered in the manual, and barely on the internet
=> True, these are not used very often. I will do my best to add these sequencers with the next manual update!

Best,
Paul

thanks Paul!

I think some guidance around different approaches to using VEP (instances versus doing all in one instance using a mixer) would indeed be helpful to many, for example I have a couple of friends producing electronic music and none of them knew that VEP can be used as a "rendering farm", they we're very surprised. One of them even works at biggest Music Store around.

Most of them are using Ableton so to get into that whole scene, having examples or videos would imho be beneficial for you. We are also always struggling with CPU power (RAM not so much) especially when using Diva, Repro and all the other VSTi that sound amazingly but are CPU intensive. Another thing would be mapping CCs (is there any way to have the parameter names of the VSTi CCs be visible in Ableton(host)? "Drive Gain" instead of CC 11)

regarding the other topics:

- took me ages to find out what to install on the main computer just to get the vienna vst plugin
=> Hm. It's just the software installation, the same for every computer you want to use VE PRO on..

MS: I only have one dongle, for the "external" maschine, some confusion was around that. Also The naming of the different software was all very similar (VEP, VEP Pro, VEP Pro server etc)

- how do I get the embedded view for an audio effect plugin (like for the instruments), and not have it as a floating window?
=> Unfortunately you don't.

MS: maybe something for the future?

Thanks again!

Markus
