    Hey all. I am running VE Pro on a slave PC with a few 7200rpm HDDs. I'm thinking of upgrading to SSDs. Is this worth the money? Can I expect quicker instrument load times? Thanks for the input.

    You need a SATA III interface to obtain the maximum of your SSD

    This allows more than Half time loading time

    reducing pre-load buffer size ----> more samples in memory

    If your machine supports it, very definitely worth the investment. Loading is vastly faster and if it's your system drive the OS is happier and more responsive in general. Also this allows using samples from the system drive. 
    In fact, if I were to stream samples from an external drive which is not as fast as the connection in the computer its performance is definitely a slowdown accordingly. This would not be so true on older machines, though.

    It is better to reserve a SSD for the samples ONLY

    I have made a Raid 0 of 4 x SSD using a RocketRaid card ! fabulous !!!!

    A separate SSD for the system is great but the gain is not so remarkable !

    Thanks for all the input! I'm going to go for it. The system drive is SSD already, so that shouldn't be a problem. I just built the computer last year and it does have SATA III. Time to fly! :) Thanks again.

    Make sure to ONLY use sataIII ports that are NATIVE intel chipset sata ports. Many motherboard include an extra set (or multiple) that are added so the board can be listed as having 10, 12 or more satas. 6 Native sata ports are about normal for hi end boards. Some server boards can go up from there. If you see "Marvell" or "ASMedia".. turn it ALL off in bios. They have fundamental I/O issues that absolutely will always create problems, errors. This is a little-known but totally studied issue (even scientific journals have published papers on SATA controller predictable errors)

     

    You will never have a problem if you get rid of externals, esata, non-native sata controllers. Use only the chipset native sata ports. Trust me.
