  • Dell r710 as VE Slave

    Hi everyone,

I wasn't really shopping for a new server but I stumbled across this guy recently:

Model: Dell PowerEdge R710 Gen I
    Processors: 2 x 2.93Ghz X5670 Xeon Six Core
    Memory: 18 x 8GB (144GB Total)
    Hard Drives: 6 x 2TB 7.2K SATA 3.5" 3GB/s
    Drive Bays: 6 x 3.5'' hot-swap bays
    Power Supplies: 2 x DELL 870W
    Number of Power Cords: 2
RAID Controller: PERC H700 with 512MB Cache
Network Interface: 4 x Gigabit Ethernet
    Video Card: Integrated Video Card
    Optical Drive: R710 DVD-ROM
Remote Access Controller: iDRAC 6 Express and Enterprise

Has anyone used a Dell PowerEdge r710 as a slave computer running VE? My hope is to run a full session of EW Hollywood Orchestra as well as some other hand picked kontakt libraries in a large template all from the one server.. currently I'm running hollywood orchestra locally and some other libraries on a slave but the salve maxes out at 32gb of ram.

My main concern is that the 2 x5670s won't be able to keep up with ~100gbs of samples loaded into ram.. obviously I wouldn't be using all of these instruments at once but I can't afford to have tooo much latency when composing, though I could deal with 1024 samples if it meant running everything seemlessly from 1 slave..

I do know the ram runs at slower clocks but that shouldn't be a huge issue (right?). I am also planning to run Windows 10 pro on it which should take but I'm hoping theres no driver incompatibilities with the raid controller or anything..

Anyone have any thoughts at all? I can get this beast for around $1400 CAD which is the cost of 128gb of DDR4 ram alone...

    Thanks!

  • I haven't, yet, but I'm interested in how you go if you do get it. Just make sure you have somewhere suitable to put it - they're loud. In a spare room at the other end of the house would be ideal.

You can upgrade the CPUs to 3.46GHz fairly cheaply. Id be surprised if it didn't work as a slave well.

It's probably worth a try - r710s are not hard to resell, they're very popular with the IT homelab crowd, but try and get it for a better price. $1400 seems a bit high.
