  • Midi to effect plugin

    Hi !

I'm unable to understand how I can send midi data (such as note + cc) to an insert effect plugin in a vep pro server instance.

Indded, I'm using the amazing Mux modular which can be used as fx processor and in which one can send midi notes in order to trigger envelopes or LFOs. In cubase, when I load a midi controlable insert plugin, I get a new midi output assignable to a midi track but in vep, I don't find the way to send midi data to this particular plugin.

    Any info/help are welcomed ! Thanks !

  • VEP doesn't have any support for what you want to do.

The only way I know to do it, is you'll have to use something like PlogueBidule, BlueCatAudio Patchworks, or Imagine-Line Minihost-modular (free), to host your plugins inside them and route the midi plugin tot he instrument plugin inside there.

VEP only has one instrument slot per channel and no way to route midi around to other channels either.

  • Thanks for the info !

That's quite a pity ! But I'm not sur that the solution you give me would work. And if there is a way with PlogueBidule, BlueCatAudio Patchworks, or Imagine-Line Minihost-modular, it should work with Mux modular. http://www.mutools.com/mux-product.html. It's a vst plugin modular synth/sampler that also hosts vst 2 plugins. I don't see how I could route midi to it.

Apparently, in vep, there is no way to have midi input AND audio input at the same time for a plugin. Am I right ?

Or maybe, by using one of those applications in stand alone mode & virtual midi cable and route its audio output to vep...? I didn't think about that solution....

Mux modular doesn't have a standalone mode but the free minihost modular does... He he...

Thank you ! But if you have another info about that subject, don't hesitate ! :)

  • That's weird because in the IL minihost, after loading a vienna audio intput instance, it doesn't "see" any vienna server. Even when I close cubase.

Is vep able to connect to several audio apps ?

  • Ouf !

Finally, I achieved what I wanted to do ! The IL minihost is too buggy. Unfortunatelly, in Mux modular, one cannot choose an external midi input. So I tried with Bidule and after groping around a bit (First time I use Bidule which is like Mux Modular), I did it !

First, I added a virtual midi port dedicated to Bidule with Loopmidi, then I loaded Bidule in a vep instance as an insert plugin in which I added the virtual midi port input and that's it ! Excellent ! Exactly what I wished ! :)

  • +1 glad to hear you sorted it out.

  • Hi there all, I see from posts that you have some experience of MIDI control and hope that you don't mind me asking for some guidance. I am trying to configure  a 'NovationLaunchControl' midi device ( which has 8 faders and is connected by USB ) to my VI Pro;  for fader control of articulations. I need some guidance in how to configure this,  I am seeing midi activity on the meter in Cubase 9.5 so the unit seems to be connecting in a general way but I do not know how or where to configure it for midi control in Vienna Instruments Pro.

Thank you for any assistance you may be able to give.

  • Controling vep plugins via midi cc is simple !

You go in view menu and choose 'automation mapping' or click F5 in vep. In cubase, select the right vep instance cubase midi track in order to send to it what devices are configured for "all midi input" and your 'NovationLaunchControl' midi device should be part of them.

Click on 'add' on the source side, click on the 'L' for learning, move the fader of your hardware midi controler, it should "learn" the midi cc number, then click on 'L' on the destination side, move the fader/knob/switch you want to control on the plugin, it should have learn it and you're done.

All that is explained in the manual ! The problem that was discussed here is about how to send midi notes to a vep insert plugin. And that's not possible, one can send notes only to VSTi and not to VST in vep.

  • You're welcome !

  • This missing Midi in the effect plugin is really a pity, because it means you can't use a midi controlled Vocoder in Vienna Ensemble Pro's effect slot...
