  • Sibelius jumping back to sustain (default)

    Hi,

I have started using Sibelius with SE. Works fine. One small problem.

Solo cello. A short legato phrase ending with a long note. Then a quarter note pause. Then new legato Phrase. I can see that on the pause Vienna switches back to sustain articulation resulting in that the long note sounds again but very short.

One solution would be to tell Vienna not to do the unneccesary switch back to sustain, which is default. Or any other suggestions?

SIbelius Ultimate. Macbook 2017 with 10.13.6

  • Hello Jan-Erik!

What you describe sounds to me like the long note includes a bow change. If such a bow change bothers you, I see a few possibilites to avoid it.

    - Shorten the playback duration so that the note stops ringing at the bow change. This can be done with the Sibelius Inspector.

    - Trigger a bow change yourself at an earlier place. For example you could remove a tie to do that.

    - Use a different dynamic level. Bow changes will come at other places then.

It's true that Sibelius switches back to sustain when no other Sound ID is there. This usually is no problem. If you write the Technique Text command "legato", Sibelius will not switch back to sustain until you reset legato with an "ord." command. Anyway, this most likely will not make a difference to your note length or bow change problem.

    Best regards,

  • Hello Andi!

Problem solved, thank you very much!

I'll just take the opportunity to ask for reasons to buy Solo strings. Instead of ther SE solo strings + I now use.

For 255 I get almost the same articulations. If Ibuy full library I of course get more.

    Are they completely different samples?

  • Hello Jan-Erik!

The Instrument collections are sampled in more detail than the Special Editions. You get more dynamic layers, more repetitions, more articulations and more samples. The Special Edition samples are an extract from the Instrument collections.
