  • What’s the best processor for VEP?

I wonder if anyone at VSL or other users have recommendations on a great processor for running VEP? I know some processors are better than others on multi-core vs. single-core plug-ins and that it’s not just about cores and speed. I’ve been looking at th i9-9900k and preferably not anything much more expensive than that.

  • Hi McArnes,

I asked a similar question some time ago, there was no "recommending" answer. Well, maybe there's one now, so I will just share my own experience. I use AMD Ryzen 1800X, and it does work quite well for me. Given its price, especially. My trail of thought was to save a bit of money for the data storage. If you are on a budget, I highly recommend to invest in high-speed SSD, such as modern M.2 and whatnot. Amount of pain you might get with slow disk storage is just immense. In my experience, this should be the number one priority. Once you got that right, spend everything else on a decent CPU. This is true with pretty much any product, but especially with Synchron series.

    Regards,

    Crusoe.

  • I bought a 9900k computer in December ´18. Combined with INTERNAL SSDs it is fast like hell. The whole PC-solution was still not cheap, but finally much more cost effective than an comparable apple solution. A Windows PC is a so much better solution for VSL in these days! And the Synchron Player with SS1 Full Edition is loading superfast. A library like SS1 with a rotating Harddisk ... forget it! My top Samsung-internal-SSD configuration tip ... 1. Use a 500 GB Samsung PRO M2 SSD as Maindrive for Windows 10 and your DAW, VE etc. ... about 100 €. 2. Put the Samples on several Samsung EVO SSDs. I bought 3 EVOs with 2 TB each. At the moment you pay „only“ about 300 € for those. PRO SSDs are not necessary for Samples. The Speed of EVO and PRO is the same. And the advantage of a PRO SSD compared with EVO is that you can write them a lot. But with samples, you do only read the data after installation. No need for PRO SSD! And of course good and enough RAM and a good cooling System. Edit: A good Audio Interface with a good driver is important too. I have a RME Digiface (and Total Mix) and can recommend it. Do not buy the RME-Soundcards. They seem to be a logical solution at the first moment. But the built components are pretty old and there are humming-noises-problems with these cards ... coming from the System.
