  • Finale don’t recognize some VSL articulations and crashes when pressing stop

    Hi Everybody,

I’m quiet new with VSL Libraries and Finale and I’m dealing with two problems:

    1. Some of the articulations of  VSL SE Vol. 1 and 2 are not triggered. In particular, I’m writing a piece with Chamber strings  and oboe. Switching between staccatos and sustain articulation, these are triggered properly on strings but not on oboe.

    2. Another may problem I’m having is that when I play and press stop in the middle of the piece the sound get stuck, so the instruments sounding at the moment of stop don’t stop and I have to manually change the instrument assigned to the channel to make them stop playing…which is really annoying. Can it be a reason that I’m using PC and not MAC?

    Could anyone help me?

    Regards

    Guillem

  • Hello Guillem!

Articulation switches should work for the oboe just the same as they work for Chamber strings. Please check the following things:

    - Did you load the matrix "11S Oboe french" or "12S Oboe vienna"? The switches in the Special Edition Human Playback Preferences can only work correctly with the according Special Edition matrices loaded. They don't work with custom matrices.

    - Is the instrument you are using in Finale really an oboe? Articulation changes will not work, if you are using a default blank staff or a different instrument that has just been renamed to "oboe".

As far as I remember the playback stop problem was an issue with Finale 2014 and has been resolved in later versions. I'm sorry to say that I don't know of another option than upgrading Finale as far as this problem is concerned. It might be that this problem is only there in the Windows version, but I don't know about that.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi,

Thank's for the advice. I've noticed that happened to me when I import a Midi file on Finale 2014. I was working with Musescore berore getting VSL, so all my works are in Midi now. And as you said, when I assign an Oboe on the score manager it recognize articulation better, even though there are now and again notes that triggers staccatto articulation. For those I have to delite them and rewrite again (some times it work, some times not).

Do you have any explanation for that?

I also noticed that grace notes are not well writen when importing the midi file, so some solo passages are a mess and I have to rewrite them completely.

There is another way to import midi files, or I have to live with it?

    Regards!

    Guillem

  • Hi Guillem!

I can imagine that if you import MIDI files, Finale doesn't always choose the correct instrument. It might help to create the instruments in Finale anew. Then cut the content from the old staff and paste it to the new one.

If you want to bring your score from one notation program to the other, you might also try Music-xml as format instead of MIDI. I can't say, if it brings better results, but it is worth a try.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • In Finale if the sounds continue after you stop playback select midi/all notes off.  If that doesn't work there once was an issue related to midi thru :  try changing the channel to 99 or some unused channel.
