  • Vep & program change

    Hi.

I'm using an "instrument" bank in kontakt which is loaded in a vep instance. A kontakt instrument bank allows to play several kontakt instruments on 1 midi channel and choose which one will play the next notes thanks to a midi program change event.

The issue is that it doesn't want to play another instrument thann the first in the instrument bank.

I double checked if the program change were really going outside cubase 10 and they were. So I started to wondering if vep supports midi program changes, opened the vep manual, searched for "program change" words in the pdf ---> Nothing ! In fact, the info looks to be unfoundable on vsl site. Apparently, vsl doesn't boast of the thing...

Apparently, after searching a bit on the web, I've found other people in the same situation. Vep seems to not supporting midi program changes !! 😐 Incredible for a 200€ software ! I hope the version 7 will !

So... The question is does it support midi program changes or doesn't it ?

Thanks for the secret info !

  • Just a few thoughts on this subject, I hope it will help...

In my understanding has every instrument in a Kontakt instance his own midi channel. So by sending the midi data to the right channel all the instruments in one Kontakt instance should be playable in Vienna Ensemble Pro.

Set the midichannel number at the top of the channel in VEPro at "all" and look in the instruments inside the Kontakt instance which channel every instrument has (you can change that of course).

By sending the midi data in the wright channel from out of Cubase, you should reach the wright instrument. I don't know Cubase, so I don't know how it works in that program but I did a test in Samplitude and that works well.

  • Maybe I wasn't clear enough... English is not my natural language. Or maybe you're not aware of what an instrument bank is in kontakt ? Have a look at the kontakt manual p.69 of the version 6 in english :

"An Instrument Bank allows you to combine up to 128 KONTAKT Instruments into one slot of your
Rack. Only one of the Instruments in a Bank can be active at any time, and you can switch be-
tween them by sending MIDI program change messages. All Instruments in a Bank will share the
same MIDI channel, Output Channel, maximum note count value, output and pan settings, and
Aux send levels. You can adjust these settings in the Bank Header, which appears in the Rack and
resembles an Instrument Header in structure."

Sorry for that long quote but it's important, otherwise why would I need progam change ? Alas, only midi progam change events for choosing which intrument in the bank you want to play.

  • Which version of VE Pro are you actually running, the VST3 or the VST2 version?

VST3 does not support Program Change data, as I discovered a couple of years ago when I wanted to use Program Change to select among VI Pro matrices. No selection happened, and when I asked about it on the forum I was told what I just mentioned to you.

VST2 DOES support Program Change, but it does not support MIDI ports and you are therefore limited to 16 channels for each VEP instance.

  • The Event Plugin can be used to add aditional MIDI ports to an instance of VEP.

In the VST2 version? I wasn't aware of that.

That's ok, VEP works much better with several little intances than with a big one !

Thanks a lot for the info ! 😊

  • Nice to hear that your problem is solved now. Indeed I didn't know about instrument banks. I don't use Kontakt a lot, just for a few instruments.

@DaddyO: thanks, that helped me a lot, too.
