  • Trouble Getting Started

So I recently purchased Vienna Symphonic Library because I'm looking to upgrade my playback quality and explore a greater variety of sounds outside of the soundfonts available for MuseScore. However, I've been running into quite a few problems. For starters, even after using the Download Manager to install everything into its supposedly proper place, none of my samples appear on the Directory Manager (nor can I find them elsewhere), so I have no plugins into insert and use in the Synchron Player/Vienna Ensemble program, or on the Vienna Instruments application. I can get a plugin for the Vienna Ensemble 64-bit program, but no sound comes out (this may be related to an error I keep getting that says it can't open the sound output, then lists the name of my laptop speakers).

So, I guess the long and short of it is, do any of you fellow composers/sound engineers out there have or have used Vienna Symphonic Library, and, if so, how the heck do I get this thing to work?

  • Hi,

if you have the libraries installed you should be able to locate them (if you don't remember the path, search for the big folders. With Win10 there is a storage menu in the settings app, that lets you see the biggest folder on your system).
You can then just add them manually in the directory manager.

The Synchron instruments must be configured in the Synchron Player Settings!

  • My problem is when I use the library installer, it doesn't give me folders with samples, the only thing it installs is the SmartOrchestra_Main.vsynvolume and SmartOrchestra_Patches.vsynvolume files. I don't know what to do with these.

  • Just put them in a folder and set the path where you put these files in the synchron player.

  • Okay so I got my samples to show up in the synchron player. Only issue is, I can't hear anything. I keep getting an error that says "Could not start audio device Windows Audio: Speaker (Realtek High Definition Audio) (Couldn't open the output device!)". Is this why I can't hear anything? How do I fix this?

  • If you don't have a audio-interface with proper ASIO driver, try some 3rd party ASIO driver like ASIO4all.

  • That fixed it! Thank you so much.

My other question is, with the Vienna instruments plugin/standalone, I can't find my samples there either. I put the folders I thought had them in the directory manager but they still aren't appearing. What am I missing?

  • The Smart Orchestra does only work with the Synchron Player.

  • I'm not referring to the Smart Orchestra preset for the Synchron player. I'm referring to the Vienna Instruments plugin: This below:

The image linked above has items listed in the presets on the right. I do not, and don't know how to fix this and use the plugin. Any advice on this?

  • Hi Declan,

Where does this screenshot come from, and what does your Browser look like?
