  • VEP 7 only offers Kontakt Mono or Stereo - NOT - Multi Output options

    Hi all,

I'm struggling to find out how to load a Kontakt 5 instance with Multi Output.

In Logic I have a number of Kontakt Multi Output (16 Stereo etc) options available to me but in the Plugin Channel of VEP 7 I only have Kontakt 5 Mono and Stereo. I would like to open one instance of Studio Drummer and route the individual drums to return Input channels in a VEP 7 Server Instance.

Can anyone point me to a manual/video, help file etc. ?

  • VEP 7 does not appear to want to work with Kontakt as a mix of stereo and mono outputs.
I haven't done extensive testing as I haven't used it as a mono anything.

The AU version does only have a Mono and a Stereo version; as a stereo version I ran consistently into the situation where past stereo 10 there is a confusion I believe occurs according to the Kontakt paradigm of outputs which VEP 7 is not dealing with correctly, where two mono outs is expected two and three stereo Input channels output from one Kontakt output channel. EG: VEP 11, & 12 have signal from 11 in Kontakt.

I would recommend dealing with Kontakt on a limited basis at least doing mono and stereo separately for the time being. I reproduced this behavior over and over the other day and I was reproducing other users' results.

However, I was only doing this with 'Kontakt Stereo' (VST, BTW), I did not try the VST Kontakt  16out or 8out.

You have these regardless of connecting with Logic, in VE Pro. Try that next, I suppose. I'm kind of out of time for reproducing this particular behavior.

I missed what is probably the real meaning there.
The 8out, 16out versions of the plugin are actually cut-down versions, where "Kontakt 5 Stereo" has 32 stereo, or 16 stereo and 32 mono, outs available. Problem is as I described, Stereo past VEP's '10' is buggy or you might say the feature set doesn't match Kontakt's.

  • Many thanks for taking the time to explain your findings.

I hadn't got that far but at least I know there's a sting in the tail coming.

Do you happen to know if this something that VI are aware of and are fixing or has it been a long standing issue that has more to do with the three way complexity of VEP, Kontakt and a DAW ?

  • I haven't followed this all that closely but I have seen it a few times here on the forum with no official response.
In my assessment it is possibly something which can't work. Which is where Kontakt divvies the outputs to its Unassigned paradigm after a point. I'm pretty sure it can't work in certain ways as it does in a DAW host.
When you assign outputs in eg., Cubase or Nuendo, no matter what you set as a configuration, the outputs displayed in the dialog are the default; in VE Pro the display is objective, just the numbers. Which breaks down where there is this distinction (where Kontakt is dealing in mono pairs instead of single stereo), so I don't think the feature sets agree.

Fortunately I don't use extensive outputs from Kontakt for years now. This was a bit crazy-making to test.
