  • Memory question

    Hi All,

I'm still learning and here is what i have:

    I-7 4 core - PC

    64MB RAM

Apollo Twin MKII DUO 2x6 Thunderbolt

    VEPro 6 and Cubase 9.5

    Running everything in one machine.

So i was trying to assess my system, i played 6 notes of Trombone same time from VSL libraries, here is what happened:

Crackling sound in my speakers, i thought speakers somehow broken, so i switched to headphones (sennheiser) same thing happened- crackling, the appolo showed max red light on the meter, Cubase showed red light on the Volume.

Can someone explain to me why is that? my system should take more than that.

    -John

  • It could be a bunch of different things.

First thing: are you sure the signal isn't clipping?

Second: What soundcard are you using and are the drivers up to date?  Are they at the proper setting for your DAW?

  • Hi Jasen,

I thought i mentioned i had Apollo Twin MKII DUO 2x6 Thunderbolt (that is my sound card)

    to answer you:

1- no i'm not sure, how do i know if the signal is clipping or not?

2- I'm very sure my UAD sound card drivers are up to date (at least I'm sure of that) now, the settings? so there is a buffer setup at the sound card level so that is my sound card and windows, then there is buffer settings on VEPro, then there is buffer settings or sampling rate at the DAW level with is CuBase 9.5.

i played with those settings but maybe there was improvement 10% difference, i think the crackling is gone at least 80%, but when i pick another sound more richer i still get sound clipping.

also i noticed, it is kind of it clips at the beggining then it cashes it out it acts a little better after hitting the first note, then when i switch to a different not, it clips again and then it stabilizes again.

it is just puzzaling with this kind of hardware (sound module - the UAD with thunderbolt, CPU and memory) and i can't play one single note without clipping, never the less putthing 100 tracks together and use muliple sound processing (filters, reverb, etc...)

  • Like I said, it could be a bunch of things but it's usually an update that got missed or memory.

As for the clipping it usually sounds like bits of static while the sound file is playing.  If your meters are pegged to the red then maybe adjust the expression fader down in the Vienna player and see if it's still in the red.
