  • Synchron Special Editions and Sibelius

Just received your email with very tempting crossgrade prices for Synchron SE in June.

But they'll be totally useless to me without the corresponding Sibelius soundsets.  Are those available yet?  If not, can we have a due date?

Also ... for myself and anyone else who really doesn't understand what Synchron is all about and just wants to make the nicest-possible sounding music ... are there any other gotchas when using Sibelius with Synchron?  Will playback configurations using Vienna Ensemble (not Pro) still work the same way, for example?

    Thanks!

  • Hi Mike,

there will be a soundset, they are working on it. But it is not ready yet.

Synchron is a stage with grat acoustics. The Synchron instruments were sampled in this stage, the Synchronized instruments are remastered versions of the traditional Vienna Instruments packed in a new player with some nice features and a matching Impulse-Response from the Synchron stage.
The Synchron instruments are ready to use instruments: The volume between the instruments is matched as well as the position in the room + reverb. The concept is similar to the MIRx mode in VI.

Playback in Sibelius should be the same as with the VI player.

    Best, Ben

  • Hello MikeHC and Ben!

The latest version of the VSL Soundset Installer now includes a sound set for the SYNCHRON-ized Special Edition volumes 1 to 4, 1 PLUS and 2 PLUS called "VE SY Special Edition". It can be downloaded here:

  • Thanks for the information.

I'm a bit confused as to why one would upgrade from the normal VI Special Edition (I have Vols 1-4, but not the Plus).

The only difference seems to be that the Synchron-ized versions come with built-in reverb?!

OK, there's a new Synchron player too, but everything I do is from within Sibelius so I can't imagine that new player software is going to make much difference to me.

So it's a few hundred euros (and a ton of disk space) for the same setup, but with a fixed reverb (albeit for a room with a very nice acoustic)?  I must be missing something somewhere!

  • Hello MikeHC!

The SYNCHRON-ized Special Editions include mixer presets with the great acoustics of the Vienna Synchron Stage. A few new instruments have been added as well. Check the Announcement video at the following link for details.
    https://www.vsl.co.at/en/News

The reverb is not completely fixed. The room is fixed, but not the amount. You can still go from dry to ambient and even choose different impulses for positioning the instruments at different places.

During our introductory offer in June the upgrade from Special Edition volumes 1, 2, 3 and 4 to SYNCHRON-ized Special Edition volumes 1, 2, 3 and 4 costs EUR 135 (and not a few hundred Euros as you have written).

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi -

OK, thanks!  The June prices are tempting, so I'll probably give it a go.

    Hi Andi,
I've upgraded to the Synchron special editions and have installed the latest soundsets per your link.  I don't have an option for the "VE SY Special Edition" soundset.  I've attached a screenshot of my ProgramData/Avid/Sibelius/Sounds directory showing that it's not there.

    I'm running Sibelius 2019.1 build 1145

  • Hello elameno!

On Windows computers the sound sets get installed to the following folder:
    C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Avid\Sibelius\Sounds

    Does it appear there?
Does it appear in the sound sets list in the Playback Devices menu in Sibelius?
Did you run the VSL Sounset Installer v.1.0.159?

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi,
Yes, I ran the VSL soundset installer v1.0.159.  I have my user profile on the E drive rather than C.  The C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Avid\Sibelius exists but has no Sounds folder in it.  The directory does exist on my E:\ drive at E:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Avid\Sibelius\Sounds but it only contains two older Sound sets that I had installed.  Attached is a screenshot.

I wonder if the installer doesn't like the fact that my profile is on another drive?

    Thanks Andi!

  • Hello Dave!

Having your user profile on E: might indeed be the reason for the problem. We will have to investigate, but the developer who programmed the Soundset Installer is currently on holiday. Please write an e-mail to support@vsl.co.at with a reference to this thread. I will send you the sound set then.

    Andi

  • Thanks Andi!

I got the sounds and the sound set appears to be working.  The funny thing is that my Sibelius Sounds directory is most definitely located at C:\ProgramData\Avid\Sibelius\Sounds (the first screenshot that I posted).  The sound set didn't show up when I put it on the E: user profile path.  It only showed up after I put it in C:\ProgramData... path

That's a mystery and one that maybe your soundset programmer might be interested in.

Now I'm having issues with Vel.XF fades and whatnot in my project but that's an issue for another thread.  Thanks for helping me to get set up with the new sound set!

    Dave

  • Hello Dave!

C:\ProgramData\Avid\Sibelius\Sounds is the folder where Sibelius installs its own sound sets that come with the software.

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Avid\Sibelius\Sounds is the folder where it looks for user sound sets.

    Best,
    Andi
