  • Question about Audio Interface and MIDI Performance Latency

    Hey all,

    I've a question:

How much does the Audio Interface effect latency and MIDI performance?  I can find a gazillion answers on the internet about recording using an audio interface, but when it comes to people who are only using them for sample-based composing I can't seem to find any clear answers.

Due to this, I got a pretty cheap-o one: a Presonus Audio Box USB.  It's very basic and gets the job done, but I'm wondering if upgrading to something more high-end would actually improve the process of working with and recording MIDI input using massive amounts of samples or if it would just add recording capabilities and inputs that I don't actually need.

Any help and advice is much appreciated, thanks!

  • Hi Sam,

high end audio interfaces have usually better driver. For example I had a Steinberg UR22 and upgraded it to an RME Fireface UFX II. After the upgrade the CPU load was half as high with lower buffer sizes. Also the latency was significant lower with the same buffer size. (I got the UFX because I planned to use it sometimes for recording, but you will get the same low CPU load and latency benefits with a cheaper model like the RME Babyface or the Digiface USB if you are working only with Midi. There are also other devices but I have no experience with them.)

    Best, Ben
