  • Less noisy HDD for Desktop PC

Besides three  SSDs, I used to have one 1TB and one 2TB HDDs installed in my Desktop PC for just archiving without a significant noise from the PC. (I also use external HDDS for backups but I don't like having them always attached to the PC). I thought I could substitute the 2 internal HDDs with just one 4TB HDD but I find it really too noisy. So I think I will replace it with two  2TB new HDDs inside the PC. For what you know, which is the less noisy 7200 rpm 2TB  HDD to buy?

    Thanks

    Sergio

  • Hi Sergio,

    1) You use this HDD for archiving. The way I look at this operation, its speed is not really that critical - especially if you schedule it to run at some "idle" time, such as at night. 7200 rpm = noisy, at least compared to 5400 and even 6000. I don't see why do you want exactly 7200 rpm for backups, therefore.

    2) Does the noise wake you at night, perhaps? Maybe you could simply reschedule your backups? It's not such a frequent operation, the way I imagine it.

    3) Maybe you should invest in a quiet case instead of a drive? Nice bonus of this is that you reduce overall noise, not just HDD noise. I own a beQuiet case, and man it's worth the price.

  • Ciao Crusoe,

Thank you for the time you have spent for answering.
I use this HDD for archiving. I mean, there are files I use all day long on it as well. And I make safe copies of files on it every step in a work in progress. If I have a problem in the SSD I have a copy and if I want to go back to a previous stage of my work I can go. That could be a retrieval or a copy of a large video file. That's why I need 7200 rpm.
For the “official” backups I use external disks and they give me no troubles. At night the PC sleeps as me.
The case I have is the right one for me (I have personally choose every single part on my PC) and with the former HD It was really quiet.
2 days ago I have eventually bought a 2 TB Firecuda and it is right for me. So I will buy a second one for substituting the noisy 4TB.
    Thank again,

    Sergio.
