  • VEP7 efficiently in High Sierra for MAS version

Is there a hit in performance for the MAS DP verison, if not running in Mojave? (asking as I am seeing posted for other DAWs on forums). We have yet to install our purchased VEP7 on our manchines and all are on high sierra or sierra

    Thanks!

VEP7 runs much better on Mojave then HIgh Sierra.  This has been perfomance tested and compared by myself and confirmed by VSL engineer.  VEP7 is making use of GUI libraries that are much more efficient under Mojave..  Probably has something to do with Metal stuff.

As to how DP performs under Mojave, I can't say.  My tests were with LogicPro, but VEP7 runs with LogicPro much much better on Mojave then High Sierra.  As a side note, my Geekbench multicore  scores were also 10-20% higher on Mojave.

  • Thank you Dewd. That is sad for me. I ceratinly dont wanna upgrade a bunch of computers to Mojave just for VEP7.

Paul, will this be an issue for those of us using the MAS verions too?  Meaning running less effeciient on High Sierra than with VEP6?

    Thanks.

Well I was a hold out on Sierra too and begrudgingly went to Mojave, but I have been very happy with that as a result, performance on my mac improved across the board.  I don't think the plugin version matters in terms of performance honestly...  The MAS version is your best bet on DP for trouble free compatibility in DP.    Its the VEP7 server itself that runs with less CPU usage on Mojave then on High Sierra.  This is most likely attributed to the fact that Metal is being used more in Mojave, and if you have Metal compatible cards, then the OS is leveraging more work onto the GPU.   You only notice this improvement when the GUI is open.  When its minimized, the GUI isn't doing any work so it doesn't matter.

Regarding Mojave, the interesting thing is that the next OS, Catalina, I feel will be something that many many people will not move to, including myself....and in fact Mojave may be the end of the line for me for quite a while. The reason is because I still have a lot of programs, installers, utilities and other things that under Mojave are displaying a little dialog box the first time you run them telling me that they will not be compatible with Catalina, due to being 32bit.  And some of them are coming from small companies that will take years, if ever, to get to 64bit.  So at least for me, Mojave will be the end of the line for quite a while in terms of OSX updates.  On top of all that, Apple dropped support for 5,1 Macs on Catalina, and so you can expect many professionsals that are still using and loving their cheesegrater will not be going past Mojave.

But Mojave does indeed run very very well, I have not had any problems with it, and believe me I am not the kind of guy that jumps on every new update.  But I can solidly reccomend OSX Mojave, especially as pertains to using with VEP7.

  • Thank you again Dewd. Very appricated.

So what happens on a bunch of our slaves which are the old quad core i7 mac minis. We have several, all fully loaded and running thunderbolt arrays. All hosts are mac pros. But am very concerned about the hit on the older mac mini machines.

Any thoughts Paul? Or Dewd? or others?

    Thanks

  • Are your old mini's stuck on High Sierra and unable to go to Mojave?

for one thing, if you keep the GUI closed on the slaves, the VEP GUI will not hit the CPU.  Only open them when you have to, keep them minimized when not actively using them.

If the minis are unable to move to Mojave, then my testing shows VEP6 to be a better performer, unfortunately.  But I can't stress enough that under Mojave, VEP7 performs better then everything before it.  It truly is an improvement, but without Mojave, you have a conundrum, because without Mojave you may see slightly worse performance with VEP7.  That has been my result.

Correct. THe minis dont have a video dicreet video card. Its a chip and uses mac ram instead.

By keeping the GUI closed, you mean the entire metaframe, or a project, on an instance of Kontakt or whatever? In our normal work scenario, unless changes something in VEP, the metaframe in VEP 6 just sits there as the front application. So we see the fader meter movements about thats about it. Is that OK?

  • No you need to minimize the entire vep window unless you actually need to look at it

Arghhh well that is REALLY bad news for 3 of our machines then, as we need to be able to look out of th econrer of our eyes to see the meters. Very sad 😞

I do sympathize.  Unfortunately sometimes software has to move forward with the changes Apple makes them follow.  This appears to be the case with Mojave and Metal and VEP7.  The good news is that if you do happen to have a metal CPU and mojave you will see that VEP7 runs faster and smoother then ever.  But I agree, its going to be a bit GUI-sluggish on older MacOS.
