  • Can't get all 32 Dimension Strings players without pops/crackles

Hello VSL forum — been browsing here awhile and picking up lots of helpful tips — thanks!

My questions is this: if anyone is successfully running Dimension Strings (original version) as 32 individual VIP instances through 32 MIR channels in the host sequencer... what kind of setup are you using?

    I've got a single computer; 2017 iMac with i7 4.2Ghz (Kaby Lake 7700k) with 64gb RAM.

    So far I've tried:

    VIP in Cubase
    VIP in VEP with Cubase
    VIP in Bidule in Cubase
    VIP in Reaper
    VIP in VEP with Reaper

In every scenario, I can't get more than one or two sections going before crackling begins. I've tried all the preload, voice, core allocation settings. All helpful, but not enough to get the performance I'm looking for. I'd prefer to stay at 512 or less on the buffer, on one machine, with MIR in the host for ease of mixing with other VIs.

Is this asking too much from this one computer?
What kind of system would one need to get this working?

    Many thanks!

  • My system, details in my signature, handles all 32 VIpro 2 Dimension Strings in unison playing rapid scales with the Pref-trill_leg articulation LIVE, and at 256 buffer, in the MIR Pro Konzerthaus GosserSaal.

Slave CPU peaks at about 65% CPU in the task manager.  MacBookPro CPU needle doesn't even move.  I *might* get one or two minor pops when I'm doing impossible runs that real strings can't do.. but 99% of actual music I'd write wouldn't cause any pops.  Other articulations that aren't as polyphony-heavy, no pops at all.

When playing back at 512 buffer, not live, zero pops no matter what MIDI was recorded.

  • Thank you, that's very helpful!
