  • Vel XF with Synchron timpani

I use the Synchron percussion with VI Pro in VEPro

    Timpani causes me an issue.

The two most common artics I want are: Open (single hits) and RoXF (crossfade roll)

But I can't figure out how (if possible) to have the crossfade roll driven by my mod wheel AND have the open single hits to be velocity sensitive at the same time.

If I check the Vel XF box the crossfade works OK but then the weighting of a single hit is now adjustable from mod wheel as well, and not velocity.

Is there a way around this?

  • Use two instances and control one with activated xfade and one without.

  • Well, true - but is VI Pro not capable of this on its own? I simply wondered if I was missing a setting?

Because I want to be able to use the ipad to switch between one artic and the other on the fly and for one midi channel - like I can for pretty much every other VSL instrument.

Using two instances would mean writing in the roll parts and the single hit parts separately - which feels like going back to the 90s.

I know many composers use multiple midi channels and instances for every articulation. I haven't gone that route - largely because I play everyting in live as far as possible - hence VI Pro and the incredibly useful ipad control surface, and live configurable CC controllers.

Incidentally I recently brought in some Berlin winds just to add colour to my VSL winds - they sound super - but going back to Kontakt after using VSL for any nuanced playing really feels like dark ages stuff!

  • Hi Richard,

you can customize for selected Patches the velocity Mode.
Select any patch and in the Edit Tab (below the patches) you will see the drop down box where you can fix the velocity XFade mode to on or off. Which is than overruling your Global Xfade mode.
So setting rolls to Velocity XFade On, and leaving all other patches to Global, (and Global setting is Off) should do the trick.

    best

  • Thank you Herb! Perfect!!  I was sure it could do it.

I've done this before but it's such a long time ago I had completely forgotten.
