  • eLicenser not compatible with USB 3.0

    Hi,

I posted this in the Steinberg support. But since there isn't a specific choice for eLicenser, I'll also repost here.

I switched to an all USB 3.0 cabling setup, and now the eLicenser is no longer recognized. The Control Center app says that "Connection to protection system lost".

I tried to connect it to an old USB 2.0 hub, and it worked fine. This however means that I have to downgrade one of the ports of my Mac mini 2012 to a slower performing standard.

USB 3.0 has been out for more than one decade. I can't believe Steinberg still acknowledges that it might not work reliably!

    Best,
    Paolo

  • Hi Paolo, I use the eLicenser on a USB 3 port for some time and did not have any problems. But maybe this is a Mac limitation? Make sure you use a powered USB 3 hub. Best, Ben

  • Ben, previously I used a self-powered USB 3 hub connected to an USB 2 hub, and it was the only way to make the eLicenser work. I got the occasional error message, but by clicking on Retry it worked. I tried with a self-powered USB 3 hub connected to the USB 3 port, and the eLicenser is not recognized. The hub is working fine with other devices. Connecting the eLicenser to an ordinary, non-powered USB 2 hub makes it work again. Steinberg says that sometimes USB 3 is less reliable than USB 2, but there are no details out of a short hint for Windows computers. Paolo
