  • Windows 7 Setting: Prioritize "Programs" or "Background Services"?

    Hi folks,

I'm running Vienna Ensemble Pro 7 in Server Mode on a PC.
The PC is running Windows 7 and only exists for hosting a large VEP mainframe.

I am looking at the "Advanced" Performance Options settings in Windows 7 and I saw this dialogue:

"Processor Scheduling: Choose How to allocate processor resources.  Adjust for best performance of: Programs (or) Background Services".

There's also a "Virtual Memory" section where I can set the "total paging file size for all drives".
Can anyone help me find optimal settings for maximizing performance from VEP?

    Thank you!

  • Hi,

Steinberg recommends to use "Background Services", and this is the recommandation of most people that tweak their pc for DAW workload.

Virtual Memory: If you have enough RAM, keep it as small as possible. If you disable it completly your PC will just freeze or crash if the RAM is full. But the bigger that is, the more content from RAM will the OS put in the slow virtual memory. This does not only hurt your performance but also SSDs, because they have a limited amout that can be written to them.

I have 32GB RAM and set the virtual memory to 1024MB (initial and max value) on only the main drive. Never had any issues. But if you have only 16GB and you encounter crashes you should go for 2048MB.

    Best, Ben
