  • SLOW Initial Sample Loading—Please Help

I recently built a slave computer to use VEP on. The slave has a decent processor, 64GB of RAM, and a 4TB SSD that houses all the samples (see specs below). I just got VEP up and running, but I've run into a serious problem.

When I start the server and load the project with my instances, the inital loading time of the samples is extremely slow (takes about 20 minutes for 9 instances loading about 14 GB of RAM). When I was loading my samples directly into my MacBook Pro (before VEP and my beefy slave) I never had load times this long for the same samples (usually about 2 minutes). After the inital load time, if I quit VEP and reopen it later, the same session loads in less than 30 seconds (maybe it's cached in RAM or something). If I restart my computer, the samples take their sweet time to load again. How do I fix this?

    Specs:

Master computer: MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM, Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB Graphics

Slave computer: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro, 3.1 GHz Intel Core i9 14 cores, 64 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS Graphics, 4 TB SSD (hosting samples)

  • Hi,

Please check if your SSD is correctly formatted with NTFS.
What SSD are you using (manufactorer, model number)?

  • Hi Sterling,

How is the SSD drive connected?

The loading process depends on the plug-in exclusively, so I think it will be a good idea to check with EastWest directly (they also have VE Pro to test).

    Best,
    Paul
