  • DROPOUTS using several slave machine (VEP7)

    Hi guys,

I’m a bit desperate, and i really need your help.

I'm experiencing random sound dropouts (every 30sec-40sec) with all my 6 slave machines.

The dropouts “cut” the network flow for 0.2-0.5 seconds.

    • My main CPU is a I7 7820X with 128g RAM - Cubase PRO 10.0.50

    • My 5 Slaves machine are I7 with Win 10 pro, VEP7 and new (2017-2019 build machine). One is on Win7. 64 RAM on slave. They work fine.

    • All are link into a Switch Netgear GS608 V4 link to a ADSL modem.

    • My RJ45 Cables are Cat7 and very good quality (length 1m)

    • Of course Last Version of VEP7 (7.0.904) and Kontakt 6 and more VST.

I have no dropouts with VEP7 on my MAIN cpu, when i’m using my cubase pro 10 & VEP7 in localhost

I’m starting a new topic because i spent my all week to try to figure it out.

So here the summary of all my try :

    • I’ve tried different buffer size on my RME UCX sound card. No change.

(I still have the feeling that in 2048 and 4 Buffer size, the dropouts less appear but still there. But i just CAN’T work in 2048… too much latency and cubase is not stable with that settings).

    • I have both dropouts on my Win7 pro AND my Win 10 pro slave cpu.

    • In Cubase PRO 10, i’ve deactivated the ASIO guard manually (for the VST3 VEP7 plugin & overall setting. No Change.

    • In VEP7, I’ve tried different setting with Thread count per instance. No change.

    • Even in Kontakt, i change the multiprocessor settings and the Ram preload settings, i tried everything. No Change.

    • I’ve thought that it came from Kontakt 6 but with Omnisphere 2.0 it’s the same trouble, and with Vienna instrument too, same dropouts.

    • So i’ve reinstall all the network card driver. No change.

    • I’m in DHCP mode. I tried fixed IP. No change.

    • I’ve tried to change my samples folder on very fast SSD disc. No change.

I'm stuck. Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Try at first to test with one slave, if no audio dropout, add another slave ...

How do you control your slaves ? ( RDP desktop or screen and mouse ?)

  • Hi Shamk,

I have test with only one... & if i add slaves, it's worth.

I control my slave with external screen (One screen / mouse for all slaves).

  • I want to exclude your network configuration at first.

Switch Netgear GS608 V4 bandwith is 16Gbps (non blocking). But all depend on your network configuration, because it's shared between devices  ...Is your switch shared with other devices at home ?

For exemple I use localy a dedicated Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X switch between my computers localy for VEP, and i connect to my remote mac over screen share which use a lot of bandwith ...
I have no dropout for the moment, but i'm still in configuration time ...

What do u mean by 16Gbps non blocking ?

I have only my internet box on this and my printer...

I took it from the documentation of your router, this the total bandwith capability of your routeur without any filtering rules .... with large data usage it could be a bottleneck, cause some latency in your network and lead to audio dropout ... (as it seems to be the common factor of your whole configuration ...)

But if you (or someone at your home) don't use at the same time large amont of data (streaming, P2P ...), there is no reason not to work.

If i was you, i'll try another switch just in case ...

    Power energy saving

Did you disabled all energy saving options ?

Hyperthreading off, runtime power management , no power saving in bios, disable pcie performance mode ...

  • Network

I have dropouts only with one kontakt instrument...

    Power energy saving

    1. I have uninstalled intel Hyperthreading (but cubase wasnt ON on this software...)  & change setting of my network card on mother board, only on my main CPU -not on slave - (powerdown off on my network card when it's not use...)

    2. I turn off steinberg audio power on energy setting and came back into high performancein windows 10 setting.

    3. I turn off in cubase optimized mode for audio power.

    >>>> It seem to be stable now............ i run 4 chords in loopback since 2 hours. I have absolute no dropouts at all from my MAIN & my 6 Slaves in the same time.

Weird, i didnt change a lot of things........ ?

Ah ok, so it's related to only ONE kontakt library ...no need to look that far ...
Do you have the same dropout with all your remote computers ? (which library btw ?)

  • No no i meant... I had dropouts with only small stream amont.

Only with one random library... And on every Slave.

But now, it's ok... On every slave... so the trouble was the power energy setting on my MAIN machine... I hope... i guess...

Remember as you need realtime usage of your computer, you have to switch off every single power saving option in BIOS and OS. It also mean no CPU regulation, sleep or hibernation (yes full usage).

Good news all s back to normal ! 😊

  • Thank you man !

But i didnt change anything from my BIOS. I know window well but not BIOS setting.............
