  • VEPro 7 & Dell R710

    Hello!

I use (with Cubase) VEPro 7 both in my PC and Dell R710 server. But when I play instruments coming from the server I hear some pops/clicks... I was wondering if the cause of that is related to the not enough fast (?) ethernet connection the server has: QLogic BCM 5709c Gigabit Ethernet.

    Any suggestion? Thank you!

PS: when I use VEPro on my PC I don't have these problems, of course.

  • Hi Danicar!

Where do you put your VSL libraries? Are they on SSD or HDD? Which library you are using?

In fact, any Gigabit ethernet is fast enough for streaming.

The pops/clicks problem is simply that your R710 is too old. Its CPU power is equal to an i3 8100 (OK for medium template ) but most of its storage are HDDs which are too slow for large samples like the Synchron/Synchronized serie. While you have a huge template of orchestra, the 4K random read speed of HDD is too slow which causes dropouts/clicks.

You can run a quick test in synchron player to view your current hard drive speed.

  • Hello!

Thanks for your reply. The VSL libraries (on the server) are in a SAS Savvio 10K.5. Pops happen with Synchron Library but with others too. Well, the server is not a new one but it has a double Xeon processor (E5) with 128GB Ram so I believe it should be able to handle it - am I right? The problem can appear even with just 2/3 VEPro istances, so not with a huge template actually.

Maybe setting my audio interface to 256 or 512 instead of 128?

What do you think? Working with randomized pops are not funny :-(

I haven't tried the speed test yet but I will.

    Thanks again!

    Dan

    Hello Dan!

The sever is ok except for his hard drive. This is a HDD which 4K random read speed is much lower than SSD. It becomes the bottleneck for streaming.

Raise your preload size in synchron player to the highest which will load more sample in the ram. Set your audio interface and DAW's buffer size to 256/512/1024 and try. If pops remains that you should forget the Dell R710 , return your projet in your PC and use VEP with them.

Or just upgrade the sever with a SSD nvme and put all VSL libraries in it.

VEP helps a lot for streaming but it can't raise the HDD 4k read speed.

    Best,

    moh

    Thank you so much Moh!

I'm currently searching a proper SSD for my server... 😝
