  • Disconnect from net but stay connected to LAN?

I'm hoping to persist with my Windows 7 installation after January because it works so well. I use it on a slave PC running VEPro which is networked to a Mac running Logic. I should probably keep the PC offline as much as possible for security reasons after support for Win 7 ends but I still need it to function on the home network for running my VEPro setup. Is there a way to disconnect it from the net but keep it connected to the LAN without changing the IP settings etc.? I've done some research on this but so far have not found a solution that doesn't involve making those kinds of changes.

Well, changing the network setup will demand changing the network settings, no way around this. The first options that come to mind are (assuming that with "disconnect it from the net" you mean the internet access):

    1. Change your IP settings on the windows 7 slave from being received via DHCP (if that is the way they are currently set) to manual. Then configure a static IP and netmask instead, but leave the "gateway" config empty (assuming your other machines are on the same LAN subnet).
    2. Possibly you may be able to disable internet access for your slave machine via your router configuration.
    3. It may be possible to completely block access to the gatway IP via windows firewall without changing your IP settings manually.

Sorry, but not all things boil down to "where do I have to click in Windows to get xyz" 😉

    Best regards

  • Thanks for that. I'm not exactly a novice so I do have some awareness that computers need configuring! I was just hoping that there might be a simpler way to enable and disable internet connectivity in W7 without changing the settings that work so well for running VEPro. I'd rather not upset that apple cart if I can avoid it.

Anyway, I'll look into the options you have mentioned here.
