I needed a break from some heavy duty projects since I am hiding out from the virus in my studio, so I did this for some fun, inspired by hearing the movie fanfares on the other thread -

  • Very cool, Bill! I thought at first that you were channeling Rossini, who it is said would yank arias wholesale out of his previous works when he knew his next premiere was in a town that hadn't heard the previous use of the tune. But when I rechecked the intro of one of my favorite Kersten opuses, I found that I was wrong; similar, but clearly different. I like 'em both.

On the subject of the Goldsmith Universal fanfare, I just heard an interview with the great LA studio French hornist Jim Thatcher wherein he talks about playing on that track. He relates that he played Wagner tuba on it. When queried if being stuck with the tuben part was the fate of the last hornist to show up for the session, he declared, "No way!" Honking a few bars on the tuben earns the player 50% premium pay as a doubler. The hornists always try to talk the composers into using Wagner tubas for a lick or two.

  • Thanks Tom, though you are right I was channeling Rossini in that I "adapted" my Age of Light Symphonic Poem ending for this.

  • Thats sounded great. You packed a lot in that 22 seconds! I am sure VSL would love to use this on their website.

I wish I could enter the fanfare competition too but I am afraid I will sound too terrible thank to my ignorance. So I will stand by and watch the entries.

Thanks Anand! I tweaked my FX in the video somewhat since first posting it -

  • Great fanfare Bill! It ends before you have even got a grip on what's happening, which is always a plus in this sort of pyrotechnical thing! Are you also responsible for the great visual?

  • Thanks Errikos, yes I did the video - it is made with my non-digital FX...

  • All the more impressive!

  • Cool, I like it!

  • thanks Errikos!  Guy, thanks, it's nice to hear from you!

I second Philippe on the organ. It seems your fanfare has revived the forum! Congrats, Bill.

  • Philippe and Acclarion, it's great to hear from you guys!  Thanks a lot.

  • The organ surely added the final punch and come in with perfect timing to round the clip very well!

  • Thanks, Anand, I wanted to make the organ more prominent...

  • Sounds very impressive.
And yes, the organ is a great idea!

  • Thanks Stefan, I appreciate it!

  • Hello William

The music is great! And it goes well with the picture.

But the mix is a bit weak. After the first bang the power is gone. Such a fanfare should come with more power.  Maybe you have to leave your beloved MIR-tool and mix the music in a conventional way.

Another idea would be to use the Smart Orchestra. There are a lot of demo tracks there that have exactly that power that I miss a bit on your fanfare.

If you like: Send me the midifile of your fanfare and I will create the fanfare with more power.

    With kind regards

    Beat

  • Actually I did another mix for VSL, though I didn't post it to YouTube.  I probably will later.
