  • Questions about this VSL Video Performance by Guy Bacos of Solo Cello 2

    Hi,

After watching this video of VSL's Solo Cello 2, performed by Guy Bacos, I have a couple of questions about it.

    1. I notice there are three Matrices in the Matrix List. Which are controlled via Key-switches. (Notes C0, C#0, D0)

If you watch the video you will notice that quite a few times a single cell containing the Performance Legato Non Vibrato [PLnv] patch pops up in the performance , but the Matrix List Keyswitch does not change ,i.e. I think each of the Matrices in the Matrix List are made up of multiple cells in one dimension. So.. the Question is :

Q1. How does he switch to this single cell matrix containing [PLnv] while not switching the Matrix in the Matrix List  ?

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    2. This performance requires many and frequent key-switches between the various long, and medium articulations.

i.e. I counted 9 articulation changes in the first 0:20 Seconds of the music. and this pace of key-switch action keeps going strong until the end of the piece.  I would refer to this as Ultra-Hyper Articulation-Switching (UHAS).

Q2. Is there a good method/strategy to decide what articulation a note needs to be assigned, or is it all a matter of having a very good grasp of how these articulations sound, and then simply assigning one that's closest to what you want to hear ? especially given the vast number of articulations VSL Libraries offer.

I'm guessing that performing the Key-Switches in real time while playing the notes in real time would be almost impossible, so this would most likely be done in a post recording phase, by trying/experimenting with the various articulation assignments, and how they sound on a note by note scenario. Which is quite a bit of complicated articulation assigning jigsaw puzzle. Or is there a better way to decipher and simplify this process ? any ideas on this would be helpful.

I also noticed that there isn't any Staccatto, Spiccato articulations used in this piece, which is most likely due to the style of the music.

Any feedback on this would be helpful.

    Thanks,
