  • Expression v.s. Master Volume vs. Velocity X-Fade

    Dears,

Beginners question: what are differences between:

    • Expression,
    • Master Volume and
    • Velocity X-Fade?

Are there any best practices of controlling them?

    Best regards,
    Seweryn.

  • Hi Seweryn,

Let's start with Velocity X-Fade: Blends between the velocity layers, so you can change the timbre of the sound anytime by blending over from one to the other velocity. If Velocity XF is not enabled this parameter is ignored, if it is enabled note velocity will be ignored.

Expression: A volume control right after the sample is triggered and before it hits any FX.

Master Volume: The output volume control of the instance itself.

Wit Vienna Instruments most of the time you want to have Master Volume at max, and use Expression and/or Velocity Crossfade, depending if you only want to change the volume of the instrument, or also need a change in timbre. It's also a good idea to use Expression to fine tune the volume of Velocity XF.

    Best, Ben
