  • Cresc and decresc Synchron SE

    Hello,

I am trying to get cresc. and decresc. work on timpani rolls but was unsuccessful. I tried the "cresc." Expression as well as the "soufflet" sign.

More generally, is there any documentation on how dynamics - including crescendi and decrescendi - are handled ?

I am staring at VEP while executing the Finale Playback and do not see anything moving.

I am using Synchon Special edition and the timpani is Synchron Timpani

  • Hello Fabrice!

With Finale it's a bit complicated to create dynamic rolls for Timpani.
With the SYNCHRON-ized Special Edition and the Human Playback Preferences "VSL - SYzd Special Edition" loaded it can be done the following way:
    - Add a MIDI CC message to turn on VelXF (by default CC28, value 127) before the dynamic roll (Finale MIDI Tool/Edit Continous Data; Set to).
    - With the MIDI tool add Continous Data to control the VelXFader (by default CC2). This can be done with the Finale MIDI Tool/Scale option.
    - After the dynamic roll turn off VelXF (by default CC28, value 0).

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi,

Thanks, this works fine and i learned how to twick with the Midi Tool that I never used before. Some concerns though:

    - VelXF is by default cc2 for all instruments in my Synchron Player, so I had to implement your solution with CC2

    - Would t it be easier to set all Dynamics (pp, p, mp to fff) and cresc and decresc to VelXF ? (don't know if it is possible)

    - Is that easier with Dorico or Sibelius ? I own a Finale 2009 only and am working with a demo Finale V26. I wonder if i should buy the Finale upgrade or switch to Sibelius or Dorico. The VSL point of view is very important for me as I will always enter music with a Notation Software (I want to deal as less with DAWs as possible) and I value VSL instruments a lot !

Thanks again for your very fast answer !

    Fabrice

  • Hello Fabrice!

You can let the Finale Human Playback control CC11 for dynamics. If you want to do that, you will have to set the VelXF fader to CC11 and the Expression fader to something else in Synchron Player.

I can't say, if it is easier to control our libraries with Finale or Sibelius - that depends on taste and workflow.
So far we don't have Dorico Expression Maps. That means that at the moment it's not so easy to use our libraries with Dorico. We are planning to release Dorico Expression Maps in the future though.

    Best regards,
    Andi
