  • building a slave computer (novice)

    Hi All,

Im interested in building a slave computer that can be racked like a server computer for use with VE pro. I know very little about building computers. Where should I start?

    Cheers

  • A couple of years back,  Tom Holkenborg (aka Junkie XL) made a video where he covered his machine room that houses his VEP servers.  At that time at least, he was buying used rack-mounted servers off of eBay from a dealer that sells older servers they have purchased in bulk from other businesses (i.e. banks, etc).   He has links in the description for where to buy.  He discusses servers around 4:30.

I myself contacted this dealer and priced out rack-mounted servers recently, but in the end, decided to keep my environment 100% Mac-based.  I will say that on the specs I had them quote, the amount of computing power for the money was pretty great.  May be worth considering.

  • A few years ago this might be a reasonable solution, but these days I would not go for these old servers, especially since they are not that good of a value any more. You can build yourself a server pretty easy based on Ryzen/Threadripper CPUs, or look for more recent used hardware/servers.
