  • Four ports VEP instances

    Hi,

Up to now, in particular to comply with some old limitations in Logic, I have used all VEP instances limited to 16 MIDI channels. But now I would like to simplify my setup, and use instances with more channels, easier to save and manage. Also, this would allow for a more balanced distribution of threads, increasing the number of thread per instance (and making bouncing from Dorico much faster).

For example, I have Orchestral Strings instances that, with layering, can reach over 30 instruments, and that instance takes a lot of CPU. At the same time, I can have a Low Brass instance with only four instruments, working very lightly. I would therefore collect all the brass (from low to high) into the same instance.

I noticed that Dorico (where VEP7 is a VST3) can see up to 4 MIDI ports. The same can do Logic, with the AU3 VEP7 plugin. So, I think I can use them without worrying too much.

Do you see any possible issue, with the setup I'm trying to build?

  • Answering to myself, I've found some discussions on this issue had in the past. It seems that all the current host applications can support multiport instances. In general, they should prefer VEP to have less instances, to let VEP balance between them.
