  • Multi-Timbral Example?

I'm confused by the paradigm/metaphor used in VE Pro (7) when it comes to multi-timbral instances.

I like to have separate outs for each individual instrument. So I create the Plugin channel (it defaults to main outputs 1/2), set it to 'Any' midi channel. I add the plugin (Omnisphere, Kontakt, Play, whatever), select a patch, say, 'Piano', and I also name the Plugin channel 'Piano'. I then add an Aux channel, select a 2nd patch in the instrument, set it to outputs 3/4, and name the Aux channel the name of that 2nd patch. But then I look and the 'target' of that Aux channel is something like 2 Piano 3 or whatever the name of the Plugin channel above it. Which makes it hard to scan the list of channels and know whether it's a Kontakt patch or whatever because it's target is the name of another patch, not the name of the plugin it's going to (or some name I've entered). I suppose I could name the Plugin channel 'Kontakt' or something, but then it totally hides the fact that the patch 'Piano' is coming out of the main channels of that plugin.

It just seems super awkward to have it this way and makes me think that maybe i'm doing something wrong?

    Any suggestions are much appreciated!

  • Hi buzz,

The first number is the number of the channel in the mixer (including a master channel), then it's the name you provided for the channel, then it's the number of the AUX output.  This is designed to make orientation easier.

Paul's picture shows it; in all such cases "1 (name of originating channel)" is no exist because it's already extant, the main/default output. 2 is always the next available output the instrument shows, tends to look like '3-4' in the instrument. I name them after creating them, or after creating a series of them anyway. In certain things which reveal both stereo and mono outs it may not be at all intuitive and requires knowing the instrument's ways.
EG: BFD3 9-16 are its mono assignments. Kontakt (sorry for being less-than-precise, I don't do extensive routing from massive multis) similarly starts considering mono at a certain point in its list. It's really simple except for that. But my recommendation is name the things what you will definitely recognize descriptively if you are prone to confusion or have extensive lists or what-not.
