  • Is it possible that many Master simultaneously use the same VEP client ?

    Hi everyone,

First time posting here.  I'm on Windows 10, Reaper, no slave at this point.

That's kinda pre-sale question (and maybe I didn't use correct keywords, but I couldn't find anything in this forum nor Google) :

Can several PC/master use (simultaneously) a single VEP Slave ?

You got the idea :  2 or 3 composers would work in different rooms, all connected to the same VEP Slave/server.

And if so, should I invest in some 10Gb LAN ?

    Thanks a lot,

    Michel

  • Hi Michel,

I'm not sure if this is possible, but I can imaginge you would run into issues with at least some plugins.
And it is probably also not legal for most commercial plugins if you don't own a license for each user.

    Best, Ben

  • Hello Ben,

    Thanks for your reply.

Yes, that's indeed an interesting point and I'm not quite sure of what would be allowed or not, as the plugins would be installed on a single machine.  I guess you and I have the right to let a friend use our own PC without making him pay for the installed and already paid plugins.  But I guess I should check this out in Plugins terms of sales, and I wouldn't be surprised if this case was already mentionned.

Ok anyway, I'm going to buy a VEP license and try this with some old PC, before to buy a new one just for this.

What makes you think that some plugins (and some not) would cause issues ?

Any other consideration from anyone else ?

    Thanks again,

    Michel

    Hi there,

Sorry to jump on this thread, but I'm having a very similar question - I'm about to move into a new studio space and will be getting an assistant.

Their job will be to do stemming and exports of my sessions - so ideally they'd be able to have their own master machine (which will be a literal copy of my own), connecting to the same VEP slaves (3) that I have in my studio already.

It's a bit of a conundrum - they would not be creating new content, but literally loading existing sessions for exports, so I'm eager to understand what the potential licensing issues are.

Thankfully some companies have caught up and already are quite generous with their licensing - my Plugin Alliance sub and Softube plugs already allow installation on an additional 2 machines.

From what I've read, currently VEP doesn't allow different 'master' machines to connect to the same VEP slave instance?

My worry is having to buy a duplicate setup (of all my machines, libraries and licenses) just to get an assistant to be able to do this, which at this point is way to prohibitive...

  • As a point of simple fact, not to argue for it, ie., for doing it hypothetically & en masse, abusing this, you won't run into any problem with Native Instruments plugins doing a copy of your templates, as they do not monitor how many installations you have, abandoning that paradigm years ago to cut down on all the support problems. It used to be you could have three authorizations and when you changed configuration and hardware ID you'd manage it yourself by deleting an auth and re-upping. Now there is no such thing. The things on a USB key like VSL, you're simply going to have to buy the second license for the assistant, if you have to have them assisting you in another chair on another [cloned] setup. I would tend to think of someone in that position having the assistant sit in the composer's same chair on the same system on a different schedule rather than a whole system just for them. ;)

The different schedule for assistant(s) is what I'm considering😊

I was merely asking is if it were possibly, as VSL have appeared to have put a deliberate stop to multiple hosts connecting to one slave, and I seem to recall reading it was due to 'licensing issues'.

  • If your use is heavy on Vienna Instruments/Synchron et al for a symphonic orchestra setup you better be doing mega bizness to buy all that the second time. ;) But say it's all Kontakt and Reaktor or something you'll need the extra license(s) for VE Pro which are not very dear.

Any save of anything on that license key needs the key plugged in, end of story. so for separate setups it's more licenses on keys for all of it. Also serial keys on the drives would tend to bug.
