  • MIR 5.1 output question

When using MIR in a 5.1 setup, how is the "dry" signal handled?

Does it only appear in the main mix mics?

Does it appear in all 5 channels, or is it front only?

Is there a difference between a "dry" solo mix in stereo and a "dry" solo mix in 5.1?

    No.

Re-reading your initial question I realised that I might have misunderstood that part: Of course the dry signal derived from a stereo setup will sound not send any sound to center and rear speakers. But technically, the Dry Solo-function does exactly the same in any output format: It will mute all wet signals.

Hope that things are clearer now. 😊

    Kind regards,

  • Ah, that makes more sense!

I was going to ask about that discrepancy but I got distracted.

Do you have any advice on trying to upmix the 5.1 to a 7.1.4 bed?

I am trying to fake some ambience by running a send from the whole mix back in as a MIR input, applying a predelay, some filtering, then panning that output to to ceiling.

I'm only adding a very slight amount so I don't make things into mush.

Is there something better I could do without splurging for an upmix plug (Pento16 etc.)?

FWIW: Not long ago a group of colleagues and I conducted a shoot-out between several upmixing processors in Control A of VSL's Synchron Stage Vienna. Long story short: Without actually re-doing the mix, Nugen's Halo Upmixer with its additional 3D Immersive Extension might by your safest bet. While its effect won't be spectacular, the integrity of your original surround mix will be left more or less untouched.

  • Option A is preferred, certainly ;)

7.1.4 arrays would be quite an upgrade if you can do it.

I would also need a CPU upgrade to use it in my template, but it would be worth it.

Q: Is there any particular reason you prefer the Nugen Halo over the Penteo16 for upmixing?

Just asking as there is quite a bit of cash difference between the two.

The Penteo claims to have near-perfect capabilities for folding back to stereo.

We came to the conclusion after a series of detailed listening tests, but I don't want to bad-mouth any of these tools. In the end, it's up to your needs, your taste and your budget at least as much as it is in case of sample libraries. ;-D
