Network Issues?

Having a hard time getting a 2nd machine to play nice. 

I'm trying to test the latency/performance with a 2nd key + license using it on my laptop. 

At the moment the only way I can connect network wise is wifi - since my laptop does not have an ethernet. By disabling the ethernet adapter on my main machine and connecting to the same wifi - I'm able to see each pc in their respective network folders(and thus can transfer files)

I've disabled firewall on both
Just in case, I've opened all the ports 

The result? I'm not able to see instance between machines - and by manually connecting by typing in the local IP it's a lot of crackling despite the slave PC not really doing anything difficult, even on 4 buffers. 

This test is mainly trying to determine if a multi-machine setup makes sense for me in Reaper, but so far it's not looking good. In the event that I absolutely must connect both devices via ethernet - am I able to do this over the network? Or do I need to physically run an ethernet cable directly to the slave machine...?

If so - would I need to buy some sort of fancier adapter to connect to 3-4 slave PCs?

Welcome adminatron, 

You need a physical ethernet connection to make VE Pro work. You can use a router or a switch.
