  • VEP 7 5.1 Surround in Pro Tools

    Hello,

There were a couple posts a while ago regarding this which never got answered.

Are there any known issues with VEP7 and Pro Tools in 5.1 surround environments (or multichannel in general)?

The scenario is to use lots of 5.0 reverb channels and other 5.1 FX chains on a VEP7 server, send signal from Pro Tools to VEP and return processed 5.1 signals back from VEP to Pro Tools.

The same setup works nicely in stereo but in 5.1 assigning the return channels from VEP in Pro Tools just doesn't work. The channels can be seen as available inputs in Pro Tools - but not be assigned. When you assign them nothing happens, the input still says "No Input" (see attached screenshot). So basically the whole FX loop works fine until it stops when trying to get back into Pro Tools.

Did anybody experience similar problems? Any workarounds perhaps?

    Many thanks!

  • Hi Pete, did you figure out a solution? I have just started using 5.1 in Protools and found the same thing as you on the return routing from VEP7. What I found that seems to work is outputting from VEP7 on OUT1-OUT6 and then sending the output from the VEP instrument plugin in Protools to a separate 5.1 bus. This seems to work but I don't like not understanding quite why. If I use any other output from VEP (7-12 etc) it wont work, but using 1-6 at least provides a working solution for now until I understand better.

    Cheers

I was experimenting with this today (Quad and 5.1 channel configurations) and had the same issue with Pro Tools Studio 2023.3 and VEP7

All the outputs from VEP are available in the list, but cannot be selected. As the original poster said...

This is exactly it. I wasn't personally using it with an FX return, but with multi-output instruments where multiple microphone positions are routed to a series of buses (Quad or 5.1 - both don't work).

Edit: I tried it with both Instrument tracks and Aux Tracks (assigning the outputs of VEP to the inputs of these tracks). Either way, I cannot assign any outputs beyond the first output of VEP (1-4 in Quad, 1-6 in 5.1)

  • Hi Tom! We have been in contact with Avid about this bug in ProTools for many months now, but the problem remains unsolved, I am afraid. Sorry for not having better news in this regard. Best, Andreas
