  • External SSD Library speed problems

    Hi fantastic VSL people

    I have a 2020 iMac 3.6 GHz 10-Core Intel Core i9 27"/128gb ram running Catalina 10.15.7

I have 2 x G-tech Mobile SSD drives and the library drive is connected to the iMac USB-C port

But when I open there Synchron player / settings / database it says my transfer speed is 51.2MBs and it should be 560MBs - I did run the rescan speeds but it stays the same - the drives are formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Any ideas on this? as I can't work out why this is the case.

    Many thanks.

    Hi Garrik,

    That's weird indeed.

Did you check that the cable is OK? Which results do you get if you run a program like Amorhous Disk Mark?

    Best,
    Paul

  • Hi Paul

Really appreciate the response and link to the speed test

    USB-C cable seems ok

I ran the Amorphous Disk Mark and the library drive looks ok (speeds of 500+MBs on the library drive)

The 1st picture is the G-Tech SSD sample library drive > iMac USB-C port

The 2nd picture is the G-Tech SSD audio recording drive > iMac USB 3.0 port (45MBs which I hope will be ok for recording into Logic Pro?)

Not sure why the Synchron database is showing 51.2MBs?

    Kind regards

    Garrikk

  • Hi Garrik,

The most useful figure for us is the RND4kQD1. With a similar value as you have in pic 1 (I have 36 MB/s), your streaming drive, I get 344 MB/s in the Database settings in Synchron Player.

Could it be that there is some kind of firewall or anti-virus program in the way that slows down the reading speed?

    Best,
    Paul

  • Hi Paul

I checked and there is no Firewall active and the only anti virus I use is the Malwarebytes which I run once in a while other than that that's it.

Are you meaning the SDD drive transfer speed is still running slow?

    Kind regards

    Garrikk

ps: I have swopped over the USB-C Cable and the speeds have changed (see attached)

  • Hi Paul/ VSL people

I was wondering if if would be better to run my Orchestral sample libraries on my iMac 27" internal drive?.

It would free up one of the two USB-C ports for other things and be super fast - are there any other users doing this? and when using the HDD it was always advisable to run the drive half full but I imagine on the SSD it doesn't matter?

I have an Mac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020)) 3.6Ghz 10-Core Intel Core i9  with 128GB of Ram - Im also using Logic Pro and also use Maschine / EX24 and their libraries.

I have a 2TB iMac internal SSD with 1.6TB free and my current Sample library is 337Gb

Would this the right way to go or will it cause problems?

    Any help apreciated

    Garrikk

  • Hi Garrikk,

Yes, the internal SSD drive could be a great option. Give it a try!

You can fill SSD drives up, in theory... but I'd still leave a little space.

Let us know how it goes!

    Best,
    Paul

  • Hi Paul

Ok I have partitioned my iMac internal drive and transferred the sample library and now the transfer speeds are 1198.3MBs!

    Kind regards
