  • 1TB Samsung EVO 870 SATA 6 Gb/s for Sample Streaming

    Hi VSL and Hardware Experts,

today a have bought a 1TB  Samsung EVO 870 SATA 6 Gb/s for my Sample Libraries. But now I am unsure and confused whether buying two 500GB SSDs would have been the better decision.

If I were to distribute my sample libraries on two 500 GB SSDs (Strings and Brass on one and Woodwinds and Percussion on the other), I would have twice the transfer speed and would have less of a bottleneck effect.

Does the difference between one 1TB SSD and two 500GB SDD matter at all?

What do you think about reading speed and bottleneck effect with 1TB SSD in comparison? Does it make sense to return the 1TB SSD and buy two 500Gb SSDs instead?

    Best Regards

    Benjamin

  • Hi Benjamin!

In practice this will make almost no difference, as in most cases the drives will share the same lanes to the CPU / RAM.
In contrary the larger SSD often comes with a better memory controller + more internal RAM, increasing write speeds and decreasing tear and latency.

    Best, Ben

  • Hey Ben,

thank you for your answer on my topic. From your answer I come to the conclusion that it might be a good idea to use 2 x 1TB SSDs, but only put 500GB on each one. But that would be quite a waste, wouldn't it?

  • You can use the full capacity of the  SSDs (as long as it is for sample streaming).

  • What ever drive you buy now, in a year you'll wish you got a larger one. I'm sure I'm not the only one with 255GB and 125GB drives sitting in my drawer.

I use one of these now, so I can swap in old drives with less often used libraries:
