  • Routing one virtual instrument back to different midi channels

    Hi all,

I have a specific question about the routing of instruments. In my Logic project, there are many many tracks that have exactly the samen virtual instrument, but different audio effects on the daw channels.

I had the idea to route them to Vienna ensemble pro, and just load one virtual instrument just to decrease the cpu usage. Why load 30 of the same instruments when only one is needed right?

Normally I dont have problems with multitimbral output of kontakt and omnisphere ect. But now I noticed that it is not possible to send every midi track to one vienna instrument, and route it from vienna back to the same midi tracks.

Is there a workaround? How are you guys doing that?

  • The workaround will mean creating multiple buses in VE Pro for the different treatments of the instrument; either using the multitimbral architecture of the instrument if it will duplicate/multiply (and using the channel input feature*) or more likely as sends to FX channels. You can, but aren't forced to return outputs for each for mixing in Logic. By that I mean you may have all of these channels coming back as a single stereo output or as many as you want to print.

(My preference is 8 outs, 4 stereo outs for an instance, more typically 1 or 2, because I mix with VE Pro automation and don't need to print more than say 4 stems.)

(*: for example a multi instrument that has more than one mic placement in its mixer, the core one is 1/2, A/B rig is 3/4, Surround is 5/6 etc, so there's things that might be treated differently. Beyond these relatively limited outputs you're either going to have to duplicate instruments or use that send to FX bus paradigm.)
